Thread: Discovery 3 brake suppliers

I didnt really think the "smaller" brakes on a D3 to be an issue, to be fair I've never towed half a house on wheels anywhere nor had to live with a D3 day in day out. Again while I've not looked into it, the D4 style later brakes might use a different abs unit and different booster, so change over may well not be as simple as it seems.

I do tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to brake modifications, especially when the benefits are debatable.

Either way when doing brakes on a Land Rover, dont cheap out with brands. Stick with known proven good brands that are recommended by members here on AULRO. Yes even as a repairer I struggle to find good brands at a reasonable price from suppliers when doing brakes on a D4.

Thanks for the tip! I wound up getting an OEM V8 upgrade package for the front and TDV6 Brembo pads and rotors for the rear, all from Rimmer Brothers. Also grabbed new shoes for the EPB.

I’ll document the changeover and any change in braking performance over in my build thread.

Stick with what you've got, and fit Akebono pads.

I agree completely with Dazza's comments. By changing to a different system, you risk bringing all sorts of complications into the equation for bugger all real improvement. There's nothing at all wrong with the D3 / early D4 brakes as they were originally fitted - but you can reduce the generation of black dust and increase the life of both the pads and the rotors by changing to the Akebono pads. I fitted Akebono pads to mine, together with a new set of OEM rotors, and have not had to touch the brakes since.

Well, I’ll see how it goes — they’re on their way now. I’ve read a fair bit of stuff at disco3.co.uk with people extolling the virtues of fitting the slightly larger discs from the 4.4 V8 D3 onto the TDV6. I’m keen to see if there’s any significant improvement in braking performance. The car is already heavier than stock and will get a little heavier still with various additions and enhancements — hence the motivation to try for improvements.

Worst case scenario is the experiment fails and I buy a set of standard discs. I think there is low to nil chance of any safety issue from my research (both Rimmer Bros and Advanced Factors sell upgrade “kits” — it’s a common enhancement). I’ll let you know how I go :-)

I've decided to go with DBA T2 slotted rotors and TRW DTEC ceramic compound pads.
Ordered rotors locally and pads, shims and wear detectors from Advanced Factors. UK shipment arrived in 4 days.

Finally got around to fitting the new pads and discs.
Got the fronts done today.

They feel great with the little driving I did after fitting. Cleaned the rims too so will note the dust but it's not a big deal for me.

Some before and after pics. I'm going to paint the calipers black but didn't get to that today.
