    So after a couple of small issues you are ready to hang up the towel, bet if you bought an LC200 at the same time it would have the same or more issues.

    Ha ............ reality check time Once you're north of the Tropic of Capricorn and 200+ Km's in from the coast and excluding grey nomads/tourists EVERY SECOND VEHICLE is a Landcruiser of some sort So if the Toyota dealer is going to carry any spares you can bet it'll be for 100, 200 or 70 something series. The wreckers are full of crashed/broken/worn out Toyotas, you'll even find them crashed/broken and abandoned on the side of the road Once you're North and inland it's definitely 'the land of the long white Landcruiser'

    Remember, there's only ONE Land Rover dealer in Australia that's not within 100 Km (or less) of the coast and that's Sutton motors in Alice Springs and they're a totally brilliant dealership but ONE in the whole ****ing country.

    Reality check - most of them don’t stock parts to cover failures... and if I have a failure.. I want to fit new parts.

    So I’d airbag it in and be done with it... it’s not odds on I’m going to break down within 5km of a wrecked vehicle.

    A significant amount of NON-Toymota are up north now.
    All doing just fine...

    Landrover has nothing available that will match or better a 79 series ute for capability, Load carrying or reliability, If it did then everyone would be driving one instead of a Toyota.
    If you need something that you can chuck a ton of gear on the back and still tow a field bin around a paddock with ease there isn't any Landrover product that will do this, This is why Minesites and farms run Toyota's.
    Toyota's are well regarded because they do the job without any fuss and they don't spend much time in the workshop having broken down, No "fallacy" there.
    Landrover is more of a "Niche" market where comfort and style is more important than a mere reliable work vehicle.

    It’s NOT why minesites run Toyota’s..

    That is purely cost... do you know how little they pay for them (per unit)?

    And if you think they don’t spend a significant amount of time being repaired (not serviced) then you are very disconnected from the reality of it all.

    All the vehicles I’ve been in that have broken down in the last 7 years - Toyota’s! We also have Rangers and a few others being trialled as well. The Rangers are proving more reliable than the Hilux.

    There’s a significant shift away from them at many sites now.

    LVs are usually DCabs and the heavier stuff is moving to things like Iveco that really can do the work.

    In 10 years and 250k of ownership our 2006 Hilux twincab only went into the workshop once and that was only for a new alternator.
    No other problems whatsoever despite thousands of K's in Sharks Bay, the Pilbara and the Kimberly's.
    My 2004 D2a however has had over $10,000 worth of work done on it to bring it up to scratch and it has also done 250K.

    Yep, but which Land Rover would a mine site run, even if they did get a good deal? None are suitable work vehicles.

    Agreed Deano. I love my Defender to bits. It’s a better vehicle than any Toyota in so many ways. But the dire lack of Land Rover service options outside cities and the eastern seaboard is a real issue for anyone travelling or working inland, centre or top end, who is not a mechanic themselves. It takes preparation, guts, charm, knowhow and wing & a prayer character to travel west or north in a Land Rover. It’s not enough to say “hasn’t happened to me” to dismiss others bad experiences.

    Its not about who stocks parts or doesn’t. It’s about an expert being available to diagnose a problem and with the skills to repair it well. And more than that, a mechanic who is not going to give you sign of an X when you bring your Land Rover in, in the first place. That’s the main issue across this vast brand prejudiced land.

    As as well as Sutton’s in Alice there are a handful of indies including one in Darwin, maybe one in Kununurra, maybe Broome. But that’s about it that I know of. Any others would be great to hear of...

    ....mods, maybe it’s time for a definitive list of Land Rover indies on a map?

    You can add Whyatt's in Geraldton to that list.
    Fast efficient service and they know what they are doing, They also drive Landrovers themselves
