    D4 2010 3.0 TDV6 future proofing

After a recent tow truck rescue and ship home incident, highlighting the lack of LR support away from the coast, I am tossing up whether to retreat to Toyota, or try to future proof the car that I prefer
Most of its work is towing an AOR Matrix pop top (2.4 tonne max). We have another car for daily use

I realise that is a very open question and might be limited by a point that becomes uneconomical

    The car has done 157,000K’s
    History

    • Lower Control arm bushes @ 80,000K’s (extended warranty)
    • Split turbo intake pipe @ 97,000K’s (extended warranty)
    • Transfer case @ 100,000K’s (extended warranty)
    • Have had inlet manifold carbon build up flushed at 130,000K’s
    • Timing belt @141,000K’s
    • Lower suspension arms (both) @ 148,000K’s
    • Am changing transmission fluid @ 50,000K intervals

Things that I need to address

    • Recent issue was a blown in tank fuel pump fuse, (show stopper), now operating, but suggesting a possible fault with fuel pump looming

    • Currently also have a small exhaust gasket leak

I seek advice on what else i should have done as a major project, before again heading out across this fair land

    Cheers

    Patrick

Last year Land Rover sold 13,112 cars TOTAL in Australia, Toyota sold 216,566, so it's not real hard to work out who's got the better dealer network, spare parts availability and support 'across this fair land'. And that's just the dealer network, there's plenty of expertise and parts outside of the dealer network as well. eg. You'll have Buckley's chance of getting a D4 windscreen (or any other part) 'off the shelf' in Mt Isa (or anywhere else for that matter) but you'll be tripping over 100 & 200 series glass and if the dealer doesn't have your part in stock you can bet the wreckers will.

Do yourself a favour, trade in the D4 for a V8 diesel 200 series and you won't even know the van's there, you'll be able to enjoy your holiday with the peace of mind of not having to worry about parts, support or expertise pretty much wherever you may travel.

Sure the D4 may be a good vehicle for what it is but IMO and as you point out, not a serious contender for stress free travel beyond the coast.

What he said,^^^^^^^^actually Tojo sold around 12000 LC wagons, and about 8000 70 series last year.

Getting back to your 2010 D4,you have done most things that should be done, but its age is creeping up.
As it ages,it will be less reliable,no matter how well you service it,and how many k's it has done.

Maybe a late model D4,as they are a fantastic vehicle,or move into something new.

I am almost in the same boat as you,and have no idea what to buy(new).

There is no LR product thats suits my purpose, particularly due to the lack of accessories available for their current crop of vehicles.

Assuming you don't want to drive some ****ty Toyota, I would budget to change:

    Alternator
    Air Suspension Compressor
    Serpentine and fuel pump belts
    Water Cooling outlet
Wheel nuts (if they are swollen)

and if you don't have one, get a fault code reader like the IIDTool.

I also have had the EGR value coded out, so as to remove the amount of **** going through the engine. Highly recommend.

I was in a 200 series last week, and reminded just how good the D4 is in comparison. Don't doubt the newer model D4s are better still, and if you have the cash, go for it. If you like it, the D5 is no doubt a fine vehicle too.

I don't think Dealers of any sort carry much in the way of parts that aren't consumables or high traffic items, so you'd pro'ly have to wait for the part to come from Melbourne/ Sydney/ overseas even. You might be better off with an old vehicle that the local wreckers have lots of, or that you might find mouldering away in someone's yard or farm.

Parts come overnight from capital city warehouses for most brands, even Toyota.

Best part when people post comments like the above..

I take it as curiosity to see what I can find D4 2010 3.0 TDV6 future proofing

So a couple of calls later.....

Nope, I’d be waiting for my windscreen (for both brands).
I can get tyres for both.

The Toyota dealer spare parts guy said he’d order in the Starter motor and CV if I paid a deposit.

So it would seem the dealer network use Air satchels just like the rest of us!

My D4 is 7 this year... when are all these huge reliability issues supposedly appearing D4 2010 3.0 TDV6 future proofing

Or rather, when are the minor annoying issues going to start appearing?
