1. Plenty of discussion around the ability to access the spare wheel winch however my LR4 does not have the old design connection socket.
I fabricated a female clevis that neatly fitted over the new design connection spigot and drilled holes in the fingers that would enabled me to attach the clevis using a 12mm set screw.
As has been suggested if you remove the rear seal rail plastic covers you can get a 1/4 inch socket extension bar to fit down between the seats. I did this and then located a redundant 1/4 inch 9/32 socket which I welded on the back of the clevis.
After assembly I found it very simple to wind the winch using the extension and a ratchet.
Final steps were to drill access holes in my false floor and boot liner mat.
2. Other issue which is well documented is the inability to open the rear tail gate. I located a post that documented how to fit a manual release to open the top tail gate. I had experienced difficulty getting this to lock without slamming it shut.
I took this as a prompt that one day this was not going to open. I wont detail how I used the documented post to install the manual release however I will communicate why I believe the lock mechanisms fail.
This vehicle I purchased has spent some its life of the tarmac in dusty conditions. When I dismantled the lock it contained compacted grease mixed with red dust which was causing the mechanism to bind. Complete clean involving numerous rinses and blow out with compressed air removed the crud and freed up the latching mechanism which was followed up with liberal application of silicon grease.
If you are experiencing like symptoms with your tail gate it might save some $ to follow this process.
A quick service to finish off the stuff I've missed over the last couple.
- Oil & filter change. Dropped 4.4kg out (~5.2L). Love the Stahlbus valve.
- Bled clutch.
- Added some more bolts & nuts to the transmission belly pan. Now has the full complement and doesn't need cable ties to hold it in place.
- Replaced the self tapper on the rear EAS compressor housing with a proper M6 bolt & washer + added the missing M6 bolt to the bottom of the compressor housing (Like the belly pan bolts, more hackery from previous "work by others").
A few years ago I picked up a transmission belly pan from a local member who had replaced theirs with an under guard.
The D3 pan has 2 bolts at the front and 4 at the back in the corners. This one has 2 at the front and 3 equi-distant across the back. A quick google of the part number "B53HS03" shows its from a D4 :

Just more detailing, and cleaned out the garage. Chucking out (most of) a rhino rack pioneer rack if anyone wants it. Missing 3 bars, used them for my roof top tent install 0BA53EB4-FE0B-4828-9260-C223AE148646.jpg
