My D4, purchessed new in 2015, clocked up 200,000 km during a 3,000 km drive over the last few days. Although I have had a couple of issues with it, overall I am happy with the vehicle and would buy another D4 tomorrow - if I could.

Maybe its time to look for a replacement. Given the waiting time on most new vehicles, I probably should make a move soon - but what to buy?

D5 - overpriced, ugly and unreliable!

    New Defender - ??

    Wait for the 130 Defender - ??

Landcruiser - hard to step down from the D4, but probably should go LC for what I like to do (tow a boat to remote places chasing barramundi).

    Prado - old technology?

Nissan Patrol - dunno anything about them - but they look BIG!

Keep the D4 for another 100,000 km - and just fix anything that breaks? This is what my heart is telling me cause I luv the D4 - but my head is saying, "Don't do it - you've pushed your luck enough"!

Exactly. If you’re willing to maintain it it has life in it yet. Mine is smidge off 300,000km on the long motor but i did have my bearings redone 40k km ago out of caution and with other things going on. I expect to run mine to 400k km until the D 130 are reasonably priced second hand when I’ll upgrade

What happened to your D3/D4 today?

Interestingly was speaking with a few Toyota (Cruiser) fanboys today. All have 200s.

None of them like them anymore, all complaining they’ve been the worst/least reliable/most expensive to maintain they’ve ever owned.

2 are planning to look at the 300. One is going to look elsewhere. My money is he will go LT

It had a service with 318,000 km on the odo - 100,000 of our driving. The second engine is pushing 180,000 km. Various other items have been replaced during our ownership (including a rebuilt transmission) and we'll keep doing so even though it will be 15 years old next month. At least after almost 6 years of ownership (and it being in the hands on the same excellent mechanic during that time) I know what condition everything is in.

Fitted Tim's Traxide D4-2U Dual System and 2 new batteries, being Bosch LN5 Starter & the just fits SSB HVT-70LD Auxiliary.
Didn't need the USI 160 version as I'm not planning to fit a winch on the tow tug.
The auxiliary just touches the sound/heat proofing above the shaved retaining bar, and on the negative post on the bonnet (following member rapserv's recent efforts) making it a bit harder to close the bonnet. Might try a wee adjustment of the bonnet lock on the passenger side in the first instance.

Nope, wash with car wash, dry off and give it a light sand if the top layer is really chalky. Mine's been great since i did the lower cowling and engine, battery and brake master cylinder covers.

We did 2 cars (w/screen cowling and covers as mentioned above) with 1 can
