They should have reset the adaptions and ran the learning process, mind you when i did my valve body rebuild and reset adaptions i didn't have any strange surging or shifting issues at all.

From my experience with mechanics if it doesn’t seem right and the mechanics say “it needs to bed or settle in” it’s a lie and the job is not done correctly and something is wrong with the work

There is a drive procedure involving multiple runs for specific speeds and gears.
I did it for my 3.0 D4 after the gearbox was rebuilt by ZF then refitted by the local mechanic.

However as my D4 was mostly driven quite sedately, TC slip at slower speeds on light throttle would become annoying but return to being very good once adaptions were reset without doing the drive procedure.

Exactly. By their logic the car would be a total pig to drive when you bought it new. Imagine that test drive - "Yeah, it's a bit ****, but after 100k km you won't realise"

Ask your dealer how far they drive your disco during PD before resetting the odometer for hand over 😎

Maybe 30 years ago. Vehicles have had "adaptive" bits of software since the 90's and any major change requiring a reset of adaptations always requires time to re-learn. The VN Dunnydore could take days of driving for the ECU to adjust to any major changes or part replacement that affected the fuel or ignition systems.

Your experience may be with more agricultural equipment that isn't subject to software that actually adapts, but for anything that does a period of adaptation while the behaviour progressively improves is pretty standard these days.

Of course you may just be using crap mechanics also.
