    Radiator Flush Technique Question

If you don’t want the colour change use nulon, don’t use the genuine coolant, it’s Castrol, its junk, for some reason Castrol coolants leak, in the case of my d4 was from a fitting on the side of the block, was a bitch to change. All Castrol coolants give me grief, but I love their oils.

I’m pretty sure caterpillar ELC coolant is also compatible, but I haven’t followed that up yet in full, it’s a different colour, if it’s good I’ll change the coolant bottle at the same time.
And yet they state both RED and BLUE are compatible with WSS M97B44-D so either they’re wrong or you’re wrong?

I can’t find a copy of the formal spec (free) to verify if it specifies silicate free. I don’t believe that the spec does require that which would be why Penrite list red as compatible.

Penrite recommend only the Blue 8yr for any later model D3/D4/Defender.

    Blue is G30,
    Red is G40

    Both meet M97-B44-D

And yet Land Rover specify clearly the Ford spec and Penrite list compatibility for both coolants! So that tells me either they want to sell more of their more expensive new product or their product does not meet the specification as claimed. It can’t go both ways! If that’s the case then I am concerned about their other products as well.

In European market there are 3 types of modern Coolant:

a silicate technology based product (G48),
an OAT (Organic Additive Technology) based product (G30)
and a silicated OAT based product (G40).

When compared with the more conventional coolants, as well as lasting longer they also protect better and are designed to be more compatible with all the different metals, plastics and rubbers you find in a modern cooling system. However, these high performance products use different additive technologies to protect the cooling system from corrosion.

Forgetting which one is right, in the case of Penrite, if the red and blue meet ford spec and red includes silicates, this proves ford spec used by LR doesn’t require a silicate free coolant as was previously mentioned.

Around in a circle we go. As Penrite Red is an Silicated OAT coolant - then again, either Penrite’s claim that their Red coolant meets the spec is either incorrect or the spec doesn’t command it. Can you show me where M97B44-D demands silicate free? I can’t believe Penrite have got that wrong too. I admit that SI-OAT is not the same as a old school silicate coolant, however silicate is the topic and Red contains it.

No, I can’t provide the spec (I’m not paying to access) however fords US chemical site lists the compatible ELC and specifies it as Silicate Free.

The SiOAT can have additional build ups in the system, and has been known to coat sealing faces causing leaks. It does create a great coating on metal surfaces.

    Radiator Flush Technique Question

    So, we can conclude -
    - the spec doesn’t command silicate free (unless Penrite are wrong - wouldn’t be the first time!)
    - we can assume that the silicate free products are also able to meet the Ford spec and may be preferred. I’m always up for improvements.
