The halogens don't have a separate high and low beam globe - instead there's a shutter that opens for high beams. So options are limited.
They are absolutely better than the original halogen globes that were dull and yellow. but a bit fiddly to rotate to the correct orientation and as far as I can tell no option to adjust the angle. It's also a pain because you have to fit them and the whole headlight, test, pull everything out again, and repeat until you're happy.
That is not correct - it is the basic Bi-Xenons that use the shutter.
With halogens, low beam is a fixed globe in the outer light and high beam is a fixed globe in the inner light. On the Bi Xenons this fixed halogen globe in the inner light comes on with the BiXenons when high beam is selected and is termed an "in fill" light.

A: is high and low beams. I can hear, and when I was changing the globes *see* the shutter open and close with the change from high and low beam
B: is the parker light and poverty driving light when in 'auto'. it is a dual filament (dual brightness) globe per below that only comes on when parkers are on or when driving lights are turned on. It actually dims when changing from parkers to low beams

I have actually since replaced the parkers/driving lights globes with a dual brightness LED but it's a little too bright IHMO
No ballast on the underside of the headlight so yes. definitely halogen.

edit: in the picture i've upgraded to the stedi LEDs. They're a lot whiter than the original halogens.

All good. I found some references to the peculiar specific Philips lamps in those headlamps. They're an odd configuration that was generally used with a shutter for a Xenon lamp, but in that specific unit they fitted a Halogen.
I'd never seen it done before, and I couldn't figure it out from any of the stuff I could find on-line or the wiring diagram, thus my perplexed question.
Seems all odd to me - there is no point having a shutter on a quad headlamped halogen vehicle as halogens light up immediately so can be used in hi beam and flashers. Has someone had an issue with the Bi-Xenons and taken them out and put halogens in?
With Bi-Xenons/HIDs the shutter is needed as the HIDS take too long to light up to use with Hi beam - hence the shutter as the HID globe is on all the time while the lights are on and the shutter moves to provide hi/lo beam and the halogen infill provides the flash function.
On an all halogen fitted vehicle there is no need for a shutter as low beam is provided by the outer light and high beam provided by the inner light.
I would be interested to hear from any other D3/D4/L320 owners who have shutters with halogen globes as originally fitted as I have not heard or seen this before - have been know to be wrong before.
