Dont be concerned by the height difference as you pull them to lock or push in to release and those caps are just clip on and come off easily.
I would start by servicing the compressor then see where you are error wise.
My MY12 D4 2.7 TDV6 is fitted with the Hitachi Air Supply Unit (compressor). It's currently getting the following fault:

Opened up the compressor housing cover and noticed that on the Air Dryer Cover end cap, the red connection for the Pilot Air Line looks suspect:

It looks to be sticking out further than the blue High pressure supply to air suspension system below it. There's also some differing colouring around the collar and end of the black pipe closest to the connection.
I do note though, that from what I have read issues with the Air Dryer Cover usually related to C1A20-64 error code though...

There’s nothing wrong from what I can see. Pull it out and disassemble the desiccant chamber and you’ll likely see the issue.
When it’s out slot the top bolt hole so you can much more easily get it back in. Saves a lot of time next time and on reinstallation.

I plan to. At the moment the error is only appearing sporadically 1/10th or less of the drives and even then it's only an Amber warning alert which resets with the car on/off, all height (Offroad and access) are still working fine the rest of the time. I'm going to order the repair parts first before disassembling for now.
From what I've read 4x4 Air Seals are a recommended supplier. Now just a matter of which kits to buy:

I would do the whole kit and be done with it. I found that the exhaust valve wasn’t the issue on mine and was the desiccant canister, twice.

If you are doing the job, i would also buy a new cap as i have had 2 crack between the both red/blue fittings. I tried all the 2pack glues etc but in the end just purchased a new cap and all good.
I did the total rebuild about 2 years ago and all still going fine.

I bought the 4x4 Seals complete "master" kit to service the Hitachi pump in RRS
In their instructional information they warn against unnecessary replacement of the relief valve as the housing is easily damaged. Although I bought the relief valve I didnt use it. That was about 3 years ago and has been working fine
Also be cautious when prising the ring retainer off when replacing the ring seals. I managed to snap the crown off the piston! Luckily I found a new replacement piston with crankrod and wrist pin from a supplier in USA
The main issues are the pulverised desiccant bead dust working its way through the system and the dryer lid failing. . The front control valve was the main fault with mine due to powdered desiccant in the valves
They are totally correct - I broke off the hexagon head but in doing so the valve freed itself so I did not have to go further - the issue was that the housing with the hexagon head removed is porus and air leaks out. I filled the area with super glue and has all been OK - when I next need to fix the compressor, I will drill out the old housing and retap to put in a new housing.
