How do I tell the difference in RRS engines

I have finally got my parents to test drive a second hand RRS yesterday. They also looked at a Prado, Pajero, Tourag and a 200 series. As you can tell by the variety of vehicles, they had no idea what they were looking for but it think they are sold on either the Tourag or RRS. Their worry with the RRS is the cost of parts if something goes wrong.

Any way the point of the thread. I checked out the vehicle before I took them to test drive it and I asked if it was the SDV6 or TDV6. Now I don't even know if the RRS comes in SDV6 or the TDV6 is the updated version. The sales guy said it's the TD. I asked if it was the 3.0 litre to which he confirmed yes. When I got home I did some searching and found the 3.0 litre wasn't introduced until MY10 vehicles and I knew the vehicle I'd looked at was only 2009 plated vehicle. I rang the sales guy to confirm which he checked and again said yes it's a 3.0 litre so it must be a late 2009 vehicle and a MY10.

Upon test driving the vehicle we went out of town and dad drove pretty sedately as he usually does but I told him to put his foot down and see how it goes as he will be towing a caravan and that's the reason for choosing a bigger vehicle. My brother and myself were sitting in the back and were pretty disappointed with how it went for what we expected was 180kw and 600nm.

When we got back to the dealer we opened the bonnet and to an untrained eye, had no idea how to identify the difference in a 2.7 litre and 3.0 litre. I did notice that it was March 09 built so that was my first indication that it wasn't a MY10. Then when I checked the manual, no 3.0 litre engine was listed in the specs section so I'm am guessing it was only the 2.7 litre territory motor and not the 3.0.

Can someone please shed some light?

    This is the vehicle

The ad states its a MY10 but it think it's wrong.

I'm at least hoping it was only the 2.7 litre other wise my tuned TD5 goes harder.

Mate I'm pretty sure that's the old 2.7L engine the grill is a way to tell and the headlights they changed the grill from 3 bar to 2 bar when it came to the new 3.0l engine they also changed the interior it's massively updated away from all the buttons for the phone and so forth. Also the new lights with the led running lights also show the new 3.0L. Believe me if it was the new 3.0L sdv6 you'd know they just go very good and you'll fell it push you back in the seat. I could be wrong but that's how I tell.

Also the new ones are all push button start and have a major interior change fancy air con dials with the temp in the turn dial all the phone buttons gone a nice leather boot around the gear shift and new steering wheel.

Put the VIN into TOPIx. Should bring up the correct details.

That's definitely the 2.7lt, I also have a 2009 RRS 2.7TDV6. The grilles are different and the side grilles are also, on the newer model the side grilles finish flush with the doors, on this model the side grilles are within the edge of the panel.

    Must be a 2.7.
My 3.0 TDV6 is LOTS stronger than my upgraded TD5 D2 was.The SDV6 is stronger again.

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

We will make sure they are getting the right thing once they are ready to purchase. It's good to know they were happy enough with the 2.7 so they should be very happy with the 3.0.

    That is a RRS L320 series 1 so if a diesel is a 2.7 TDV6 (or a 3.6 TDV8). The 3.0 WAS NOT FITTED TO THIS MODEL.

The RRS L320 series 2 has a different interior (similar a D4), led rear lights, two bar grill and other subtle changes. It has the full power 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 but early versions could still have had the TDV8 before it was dropped.

I would say the vehicle in the ad is priced for a 3.0 TDV6 but the ad is wrong and it is a 2.7TDV6 so worth in my view $5-$7K less.

As mentioned put the VIN into TOPIX and it will tell you exactly what it is.

The 3.0 has 2 MAFs attached to the air-box whereas the 2.7 only has 1 - 1 per turbo.

Graeme, is it worth removing the maf's and cleaning with contact cleaner from time to time ?
