Low ratio single-range boxes are all well and good - until you need to go backwards.

    Cheers,

A mate bought an Amarock,it has no low range either. He tells me its not needed.Told him wait until he is stuck on a soft beach, backwards is often the only way out and you will need low-range.

Well not quite.. It's a new chassis with new suspension. Are the engines carry over from the evoque? Or are they the new jlr diesel instead of the ford jobs ?
Low range ? Not sure. It's pretty light compared to a D4 so may not be absolutely necessary. I've had our freelander2 up to its belly in soft sand (tyre pressure too high) but there was no issue with not enough grunt in forward or reverse (it's clearance that's it's downfall - oh for eas)

Why? Dual range TC was a packaging exercise, just like V8s were made to reduce the length of the old inline 8s.

A dual range TC usually crosses over by 3rd low...

So 2 crawler ratios and 7 above in a single range should have it covered nicely

And backwards isn't usually a concern as most reverse is quite slow and could be lowered...

It's the new freelander. They just reorganised their range to call it a discovery sport.

It's competing in exactly the same market as the previous freelander. Just with a 7 seat option.

I Think it's more a personal comfort thing it would take some getting used to not having "low range" when off road. But in all honesty, with the likes of 9 speed autos coming out now why can't the first 3 gears be low range type ratios with the remaining 6 ratios similar to the current 6 speeders. Could just electronically lock out the lowest ratios and call them low range. I'm surprised no manufacturer has grabbed a hold of the idea, being able to shift into low range on the fly would have to count for something right?

And I agree with you reverse comment

I think you'll find the new RR and RRS can shift into low range at speeds up to 60 or 50kmh cant remember what it is and the D4s can shift out of low into high at speeds up to 60kmh. Im pretty sure the new 8spd Amarok dont use first gear unless needed they normally start off in second unless you hit the off road button or it really needs it. I could be wrong but i think thats what the salesman told me.

There's no point locking out any gears. If it needs them, it'll use them and if it doesn't then it won't. The whole idea behind autos with a lot of gears is so the can be in positive drive with the torque converter locked virtually all the time.

Isuzu auto's have locked out lower gears, they start in 2nd or 3rd and if you want lower you manually select via a switch on the gearstick,it's a simple easy idea.VW also start in second or third, the gearbox decides. Pat
