How is this any more Versatile the a Ford Territory, Pathfiner or Subaru Outback ?? its not , its a Station Wagon .
I would call an Outlander Versatile , The Outlander PHEV can run on Petrol or Electricity . and there is 5/7 seats or Petrol & Diesel models, thats versatile.

It's easily the most versatile SUV. It's not leading sales numbers for various reasons including premium price, damaged brand reputation outside the cities, and some terrible dealerships.
All the cars you mention don't even remotely come close to a D5, its one of the most practical family 4x4s money can buy. Look into the D5 mate, its no series 3, but its extremely impressive for what it is [emoji41]Quote:

So it really depends on your definition of versatility in regards to a 4x4
The D5 is the most versatile 4x4 in the following ways:
It can be a lifted 4x4 with amazing approach, ramp and departure angles offroad
It can be a low slung safe almost car like 4x4 onroad so that it hugs the freeway and can handle high speeds safely.
Then it can hit a river crossing up the cape 900mm deep without a snorkel.
It has a foot of travel offroad, with diagonally crosslinked long travel suspension.
Onroad it reduces its travel and opposes travel and body roll.
In can kneel to its bumpstops and let your wife in or drop down to fit in just about any carpark in a few seconds.
It can have 7 adults in side, 6,5,4,3 or 2, with all other room in those combos 100% available for luggage or storage as the seats 100% disappear.
It can have 2 adults with all other seats completely gone leaving an incredible about of luggage or storage space.
Flatten the second and third seat (which you can do remotely via an app should you so wish) and you’ll be able to squeeze 2,500 litres of cargo on board, helped by its two-metre load length and 1.4-metre load width. But drop only the third row and you’ll still get 1,231 litres. And you can add to that up to 21 separate storage areas that can add another 45 litres of space.
It can pick up the kids from school or turn up to a 5 star hotel and the next day be sill deep in mud or covering hundreds of kms of corrergations reasonably reliably and in amazing air suspended, climate controlled family friendly comfort even on a 40degree day and emitting 20times less pollutants than a Renault Clio and doing it at 6.5L per 100km!
It can be specced to work in the police force,a tough low spec family tourer, a commercial delivery van or a high end highway cruiser.
In regards to its breadth of capability for a family 4x4, it has no match and hence in this regard it is in fact also very versatile by the above definition. However it has its limits for sure.
The defender is a very versatile 4x4 in regards to being a trully capble adventure tourer, weekend hardcore 4x4, a serious workhorse, a hipster cafe warrior, etc etc
However there are many things the defender can't do well, and to improve its customer base to a sustainable business level, this needed to be addressed. No easy task whilst keeping its heritage intact.
Bring on the new defender I say, however the current defender still has its place in the world and a very important one just as the RRC does to the new RRV. Personally I love both for different reasons.
