I wouldn't say I am a hater , a hoper is more correct, but, I just see this as morphing towards a D4 clone , which isn't such a bad thing.
As an answer to your question, L/R would have had my hard earned this year if they had an option other than the current crop of clone vehicles , I went and test drove a couple just to see if my opinion would change but it didn't so in the end the D3 got a $5k birthday and it will be kept until after the initial rush on this pretender defender and I get to see if its something that I want.
As for how and what they make money on , they don't seem to have much vision for something different and there seems to be plenty like me who L/R have turned away simple due to the choice and price structure of the latest offerings.

If a base model zero options Discovery Sport
Ie no low range no real off-road cried as spartan as a LR can get is $62 driveaway
Is an estimate at $65 a bit low for the Australian market
With the Uber marketing this thing is getting it surely can’t be pegged at soccer mom level

Base is bare bones.
Disco 5 base is: $72k
Last year and year before was much lower
Imo they've pushed D5 closer to RR in many ways, i believe JLR are on record as such from memory.
This now leaves the gap for the new Defender both in pricing and market.
Disco sport (LR's biggest seller in AU at the moment according to my dealer) looks to be: $56k base. (Very underestimated car imo, can still sleep in back of it)
Who knows i could be wrong and it could have identical D5 pricing.

Might be $56 in some way shape or form
The only price that really matters is driveaway price
Which for a bare bones disco sport is $62k
Unless they drop the disco sport price and bump up the D5
I just can’t see it start at $65
My predictions
First release in Australia:
mid wheel base model
6 seat
4 cylinder engine
Coil springs
Base $80 drive away
Air spring up spec model $92k
Bigger engine
Air spring
Bells and whistles $102k
Shorty model only available in top spec
$95k
Let’s just see!!!

SubscriberSo, if $80k is too much for the new Defender, how are people spending $80k on Amaroks and $125k + on blinged up 79 series? The Patriot Camper 79 series trucks are north of $125k, and that's before they make them 6x6 ... just noticed that they now have chopped LC200s starting at $164K and Rams from $215k. Who's paying that money?
