Heres a few interior comparos of 2020 models, granted the defender is not fully revealed, however the design language is clear from spy shots and leaked images.

I know from where I'm sitting which ones look like Luxury SUVs and which ones don't.

Why not put up a picture of a 78/79 Workmate interior because THAT is what a defender should look like

This new LR2020 is NOT a defender and I think you just proved that by showing how similar the driving experience will be compared with Luxo SUVs????

The buttons and stuff needs to be rugged and the fabric rugged. I still hold out hope. I am conflicted about the width. Overall it's too wide for.comfort on tight trails but a great (needs to be great) turning circle would help at least. The upside is massive load room and stability on road and off. The wide stance should go a fair way to making up for loss of stability that comes with loss of live axle (even with cross linked bags).

I think it's far too early to decide if it's a 'real' Defender. Let's wait and see what we get.
What does a 'real 'Defender mean anyway?
I'm happy with our Defender, but it's not a viable mass market vehicle for the future. It has to pass crash tests, be reliable and durable. Six seats would be good. A range of body styles.

Haha Nah, just was showing what some would describe as luxury suv interiors on other popular 4x4s the new defender will no doubt compete with. And also showing how the new Defender compares to them in the context of my reply.

For me its going to about trying to get decent power, just enough comfort for a big lap, whilst still having specs to handle Cape york, the outback, Vic high country, weekend tough tracks and all the islands etc reliably......says BR.

Well it's already been that way since the first Range Rover was released and right up to now every Land Rover released has that capability , so you are really asking for nothing new. What's all the excitement about here?

I disagree with that in part. The old Tele track can stop stock (but with good AT's) D3's and D4's (and by definition RR) in several parts. I am keen to have the same off-road ability as a mildly modded Defender or D2. I am not sure the new model will have that but with the likelihood of 33 inch tyres (legal), locking rear diff and the most up to date traction control and (possibly) longer travel and clearance than D3,4,5 I'm still optimistic.

Any that's ANY vehicle manufacturer that thinks they can keep a model styling from the 1960's and continue to be a viable player is dreaming. Comparing the interiors of luxury vehicles with spy shots is also a waste of time. Here's the interior of a Toyota Yaris

All interiors are begining to look the same, so LR applying the current (acceptable) styling to this new vehicle is totally forseeable and expected. If you really really really want an all metal dash board with old style toggle switches then by all means go get an old Defender or BJ toyota or some such other antiquated money pit. If you want Land Rover to survive as a brand and be a player in the lower end of the market (as I do) then some up styling has to take place.

Whatever this new vehicle looks like, whatever engine it has, whatever power, torque, luxury items, cup holders or vibrating seats, it MUST (i feel) be reliable and have at least a base model that the ordinary worker can afford. I just hope they get it right.

I’ve said before but I guess that is several thousand posts ago ;)

A real defender to ME is
Dual cab, “hose out interior” ie no carpet/ leather rubbish,1T plus in the tray, able to traverse any terrain within limits, no silly plastic sills and guards that get banged up when pushing through scrub

Essentially all the things that a Range Rover driver see as drawbacks of a 1989-2015 “defender” all the things Range Rover drivers want to update I see as the unique qualities that make a deefer a deefer?

To be honest to say a vehicle like this can’t be sold is crap - Toyota sells the crap out of 78/79 vehicles hundreds times the number of all LR sales worldwide - it’s just JLR doesn’t see a workhorse in the same light ... they see cashed up city slickers and want to trade on a name for the latest SUV

If you think there will be an affordable to the ordinary worker model your dreaming!! Look at the pricing of middle of the road SUVs like Discovery Sport.

And to call a defender antiquated money maybe have a perusal in the modern JLR sections with respect to 6 speed gearboxes and 3L engine cranks and wonderful electronic gremlins

I’d hazard a guess that money pit could be better directed at D3 onwards JLR products moreso than older models?

Anyways I’m happy to wait and see but not expecting anything other than just another luxo SUV.

Owning a 4WD is like owning a boat, they are all money pits. Whether it is fuel, accessories, maintenance or reliability issues.

Toyota 70 series is more successful than the Land Rover cab chassis because it is reliable with an extensive dealer network and is sold into the mining and agricultural industries on that basis. Sorry but LR missed the boat on that one, if they had been more pro-active in persuing reliability then they may been able to hold up against the Toyota a little bit. Land Rover concetrating on military vehicles was always a limited market with lower vehicle turn over.
