I read JLR wants to lift Defender sales from 20,000 to 80-100,000 a year.
Took a while to find these, but they are being spotted
That’s double the number of annual sales of D5 ATM.
So it’s got to be appealing to a broad market.
I am guessing if the D5 had been just an update of the D4 sales would have been a lot better.
Instead, they re built/engineered/developed a completely new vehicle and pushed it up a class, with more than likely huge development costs.

Range Rover puts style and luxury first and mostly refuses to compromise for practicality. There's a market for that.
Disco 5 and Disco Sport are less stylish, less luxurious and more practical than Range Rovers, but not as practical as D4 was let alone Defender. There's a market for that too, especially the Sport it seems.
New Defender says it's going to focus on being practical while offering what style and luxury it can. I'm hoping that the new Defender is even more practical than the D4. Most of you guys are worried about how much less practical than the old Defender it'll be. The question is how big a market there'll be for the final product's mix of practicality and comfort, considering also the price.

I'll completely forego comfort and ergonomics for practicality. Need hose out interior , need to have an interior that can withstand immersion in fresh (ish) water , if a car becomes a stat write off because it got soggy carpet and seats from being stuck whilst fording it is NOT a practical 4x4 .
Dont want or need anything plush, (cup holder would be good) don't need screens or anything electronic or bluetooth, proper manual controls are practical .

I think they may have deliberately set out to change the D5, for example by changing from square to rounded styling, and open up a gap wide enough for the Defender to fill in various versions.

“Yes but 99.9% of buyers around the world do not want that - if LR just build a vehicle to satisfy the die hards then LR will go broke.”
I reckon if all they do is make luxury SUV’s they’ll go broke. ...and if thy don’t respect the die hards enough they’ll go broke.
JLR’s core and only market now is luxury SUV’s. There’s no diversity in their line up in terms of the market. All their vehicles are already designed for the mid-high end ‘urban adventurer’ market. They need to diversify back into the work vehicle market IMO.
