I do like Rivan and ive posted extensivly and positivly about them on here previously.
Considering JLR just won European Car of the year with the Ipace SUV and 30+ other awards to date, Rivian Leading the EV SUV packs a stretch to say the least, they haven't released a car ever, they have no retail premises, no service network, no history and are going to deliver a car that people wont be able to use to offroad tour with in OZ for 5-10 or more years imo.

Dont get me wrong, I also like what they stand for, but for me, for the foreseeable future the new defender looks much more practical especially in hybrid form.
Here ya go:
New 2017 Land Rover Discovery driven – the ultimate 4x4 returns to rule off-roadHeslop explains that the fording maximum is set at 900mm "because after that it floats". Land Rover has a test where the vehicle is put into a water tank at up to 30 per cent greater depth than it claims, all the doors are opened and the vehicle left for an hour, before the poor test engineer has to wade back in and check the vehicle will restart and crawl its way out of the flood. I ask whether climbing on to the roof and yelling for help might be a better solution, but Heslop points out that there are parts of the world where no one will hear you shout, or at least no one you want to come and rescue you.
Cheers,
Sean

Wow, thanks
Found a good vid also showing the bonnet acts as a water/air separator, then an additional chamber to separate air/water before airbox.

I don’t base my views on others’ heresay. I’ve seen much more of Rivian than I have of new Defender. I think Rivian is way out in front in terms of EV SUV design from what I’ve seen.
Ipace is a sports car in my book. Hopefully Defender won’t be a sports car or an SUV.

As many people are buying 4WD's to tow their caravans around I am a little concerned about just how light these new D5's are and I imagine that the new defender will also have a low kerb weight/GVM and their ability to SAFELY tow caravans that easily exceed the tugs GVM.
I have always been lead to believe that the trailer should Never be heavier that the towing vehicle, Am I wrong in thinking this?
For example I have a little Navara twincab that has a kerb weight of a bit over 1800kg and yet it is specced to tow up to 2.8t and I would Hate to be towing that much weight behind that little bugger.

This is often stated, but how many prime movers are heavier than the trailer they are pulling?

Hear what ya saying regarding ipace not being a big tuff 4x4, however you said rivian leads the pack as the best EV SUV, Ipace is an SUV by definition, is in the public's hands and currently the best.
SUV Reviews | CarsGuide
Ipace currently is the worlds best EV SUV and "leads the pack" according to nearly every automotive reporter in the world.
Some even say its the best EV you can buy.
As for future models of rugged adbenture EV 4x4s, Defender and Rivian are looking good, but both very different vehicles imo.
Plenty of non "heresay" facts are known about what the defender will and won't be
Getting exciting.
