Rear overhang is too short to be a Ute. Box look is probably just shaping to confuse!

Yep I know how capacity won't be up there but 1900pounds load carrying isn't bad and far higher than Jeeps predecessors. It would likely beat the off-road ability of the new defender in Rubicon guise (especially the Wrangler Rubi so no long overhang) but having a 5 foot bed, full cab and all that off-road ability is sweet. They will come in a V6 diesel too. Now Jeep is not the last word in reliability but neither is LR and at least the Jeep has the advantage of being simpler so less to go wrong.

    Cheers

Offroading or getting to your destination 5000km away on/offroad safely or a combination of the two?

In many many ways including higher speed off-road dirt tracks, taller the rim the better.

Look at Bowler and Ultra 4 rim sizes.

Well seeming as though they have shown approx 18s-20s with a variety of profile tyres, this would be true only for the low profile version we have seen at the Ring.

So would you not agree, a more factual and fair statement would be, LR are going for looks, braking and off-road practicality.

Mate you know smaller rims and tall rubber is better in the every off-road situation.

    I won't be drawn.

If Jeeps are your thing maybe Won’t be retro... looks a little weird to me proportion wise, dash is also pretty ugly, new defenders leaked dash looks much cleaner and more bearable but maybe in time ill come around to the jeeps.

Far too long for me spare under back(im guessing as it would be even more too long, 19inches longer wheelbase than JK so bad ramp over, bad departure angle aswell, but great approach.(offroad credentials)

    Jeep Gladiator
    43.4 approach
    26 deg depart
    20.3 ramp

New Defender (specs worked out by alloy and grit)
    45 approach
    50 depart
    50 ramp

    Only 725kg payload.

Only 760mm wading. D5 in 900 or 1m unofficially, so new defender will be very similar no doubt.

Hopefully it doesn't have the same 1 star safety rating as other recent Jeep wranglers.

V6 petrol doesn't look exciting especially bring 12L/100 combined, on the other hand the expected straight 6 petrol does on the new defender.

They will sell well, because Americans love jeeps and hence the aftermarket also will love them.

I like the fact you can take the roof off that is pretty cool! Good low range in manual and disconnect sway, love the camera wash, and tyre size options.

Looks like they have copied a fair few of Land Rovers terrain response systems features as well as off-road cruise control.

Americans also love Defenders so it's going to be very very interesting to see the aftermarket fully backing the new Defender with large numbers of vehicles in the states.

Don't worry mate not trying to draw you at all just clarifying your statement. Won’t be retro...

Your comment was that smaller rims are better, that simply is not the case.

All things considered for a modern safe 4x4 a medium profile wheel is much "better".

For off roading only, maybe a 16 or a 17 or 18 depending on the type of driving you are doing. However don't expect great on road safety or handling especially with the 16s.

If you do a combination of on and off road or If you mainly stick to dirt roads and tend to tour rather than rockcrawl. 18s or 19 with a decent profile tyre is more than sufficient.

If you just stick to the Blacktop 20s are great with the right tyre.

I know what you're trying to say with smaller rims are better and for sure if you are talking off-road only you are correct. I used to think 15 inch was the Bees Knees, I now run 16s on my RRC have a would like a bit less way on the freeway and I have good selectable sway bars. It's just when you consider all factors of a modern safe four by four smaller rims are simply not better.

My second post clarified mate. Off-road. And even on higher speed dirt with wash outs and drains, badly corrugated dirt etc 16's are arguably better in terms of cushioning the ride and having less chance of busting a sidewall but happy to confine my comment to harder off-road work especially low range and soft sand aired down. Cheers

I come down on the 16"/17's are better on dirt/off road side of the debate but interestingly WRC and even the full size Dakar 4wd tyres are 60 aspect ratio these days, which blew my tiny little mind!
The US off road racers still run high profile tyres.
    As do F1!!!!
