About twelve months back I actually emailed the SA and NSW vehicle registration authorities and enquired about towing a trailer with trailer exempt registration into their states and they both replied with similar answers. "Providing it meets the Vic Roads exempt criteria and it is behind a Victorian registered vehicle it is permitted".
I wanted to tow my trailer to into SA which I did.


More recently I contacted Vic Roads about trailers exempt of registration being towed behind a vehicle on Historic Registration. Spent for ever on the phone but eventually got an answer that it is permitted but they do not manufacture the exempt plates to suit. So either paint the number on or chalk it on. Registered trailers can be towed behind "H" registered vehicles too.

I didn't realise trailer rego was so cheap in Vic. Costs me $90 a year to register my #5 in Qld. If it wasn't so cold I'd move down there LOL.

It's not cheap, it's just more realistically priced.

You wouldn't want to come to NSW, H plates on my No5 cost me $20/year. (except trailers now get G plates on HCRS)

One of my N05's is on full rego as a "home made" (as they didn't know what Ordinancy factory was and it use is - farm trailer, $0/year is the rego fee. Been like this since 1996.

I have a tandem trailer that is on full rego as a farm trailer (looks just like a car trailer!) $0/year. rego'd this last year.

All you need to do is spend >$1m and get yourself a small farm and start saving money! Lol

Would 21 acres constitute a farm?

I have just looked up the Queensland rego papers for my No5 which I have had since 1986,it reads: Year of Manufacture:1966, Make: Ordinance Factory,Model:ATM up to 1.02T Body Shape:Box Trailer,Vin/Chassis 1974,Tare:120, ATM: 750,Class:25,Purpose of use:Private.

For that I get the privilege of paying $92.55 per year

Are you producing anything on the "farm"?

Intensive agriculture, like market gardens, are often produced on properties less than 5 acres and are considered farms. The ATO/Centrelink assess property less than 5 acres as part of primary residence, but acreage greater than 5 acres is assessed as both an asset and land taxable (state). So at least 16 acres of your place falls under those categories. (If you plan to retire and get a pension, make sure you are below 5 acres at least five years before pension entitlement age.)

Note: I don't think old Land Rover 101s are considered produce!
