Maybe someone swapped it for a 1HZ when no one was looking.
But then, I've just gone from a 300Tdi auto to a 1HZ and couldn't be happier

Second all the basics mentioned above, nothing goes wrong with Tojo diesel sixes, but maybe look at tappet adjustment. Often overlooked as is it time consuming on a 24 valve engine...

My understanding is it's carried across a service or two but I'll confirm that on Wednesday when I get back.
It's has 'something' replaced for being down on power a month or so ago, my boss said something 'like a regulator'.
It spends plenty of time on the highway, I don't baby any of the vehicles as company policy is to idle the vehicles to warm them up, which is not an ideal practice. They also spend lots of time towing.
Its had issues since as long as I can remember, had another worker come in asking if it was usually bad on fuel or down on power, suspecting crap fuel.
When I first started I was told it had never been right after the top end rebuild.
I'll have a look at it if I get a chance, it may be the vehicle going in for a service on Wednesday but either way I'll check out what it's had done and when.

I was thinking the same thing.
I've cleaned gauze filters in the fuel banjo's for the supply line into the lift pump on older diesels.

PS after another read of OP.
If it's only done it since the head was off get the cam/crank/fuel pump timing checked.

    Valve Timing perhaps.
Its common rail I'm guessing -so injection timing is electronic.

The 1HD isn't common rail I don't think, direct injection

These have electronic injection pumps and yes they can be mistimedd during belt fitting. Also can suffer from advance problems within the pump so don't rule that out... if it has had a set of injectors then they would want to have been genuine toyota not reco ones... they are very particular.

Just been told I have to go and collect it from the mechanics.
    An update on previous info.
It HAS had a set of injectors, quality unknown without digging out receipts.
The last time it went in it was a stuck open EGR.
It HAS had the head off.
    Diagnosis from the mechanic?
'leaving the hubs in onroad, increasing resistance'
bull**** if you ask me, all the other vehicles run with the hubs in essentially all the time and they're fine.
    I guess we'll see.
I won't be taking my car to the mechanic we use...
