Will a dirty MAF sensor show up as a fault? I do have a code reader for the ECM... Ill clean none the less though. Being a GEMS, and a different type of sensor to the one shown in Pauls MAF cleaning page, any tips on the clean?

Philip is your chip tuned for power or economy? I think i found the place with some googling that still does the Unichip tuning.
AFAIK often a MAF fault will not show as an error or in some cars show as a O2 sensor error as the mixture becomes rich on "limp home".

I have never really taken notice of the GEMS sensor but if it is a "film" sensor , you spray both sides orf the bottom of the "blade"with electronics cleaner. The Bosch film sensors are reputed to be shorter lasting than the earlier wire ones but you can buy just the sensor part which is cheaper .
Tuned for power or economy? That is a good question. I asked for attention to be paid to the cruise timing , but do not think they spent much time. Most tuners of 14CUX will take fuel out on cruise so that part is economy( however I have since fitted o2 sensors which always run lambda at cruise). E.G recently I added 3 degrees timing to mine and had an excellent result in power but I do not know yet about economy or whether I will get detonation.
For GEMS it is a bit more complicted as GEMS is a sophisticated system with timing control and knock sensors. Usually the tuners add timing which usually increases both power and economy as the low comp engines were tuned for "Rest of World" and 89 octane AFAIK and I have heard have quite a safety margin before detonation. On these systems basically what the tune does is reduce safety margins.

Graeme Cooper told me several years ago that the gains on GEMS were not great with a Unichip as GEMS is an advanced system which is not far from optimal.
Anyway you should find out the difference when you drive it this weekend.

    Regards Philip A

If it helps on the economy side of things i did a maf clean, 2 new oxy sensors and a carbon clean using the subaru cleaner on friday and the highway cruise economy went from 21l/100k to 13l/100k. Will also be trialing a new set of injectors as the original rover ones have a VERY poor spray pattern when i ran them through the injector bench, even with new injectors of the same make they atomize the fuel about as well as a garden hose.

I also just put a set of pedders foam cell shocks in and they ride like a limo, you can hit a speed bump at 30k and barely feel it.

    cheers

Awesome economy gain Mick, What is the "Subaru cleaner"?

Keep us informed on injectors please. I'd like to try them on mine if they are any good... I know the Thor P38a used the same coil pack as a certain model 90's Ferrari, wonder about the injectors

Also wonder if Pedders are rebranding the same oil/twin-tube shocks I'm trialling at the moment for the Hard Range lift kit... except these are 12-way adjustables that give a nice balance between the comfy ride of Boges and quick return of Bilsteins.

    Cheers, Paul.

Nice returns on the economy, whats the cost of the O2 sensors? Sounds like the kind of thing ill do. And as per Paul, whats the subaru cleaner?

I toyed with the idea of replacing all my injectors when I first got my GEMS P38, but as I went LPG there turned out to be little point... But while I was investigating I found quite a lot of people were recommending M-9593-C302 injectors which, compared to stock, are an improved upgraded version with higher flow capacity. Rover renovations has a small blurb about them here (HIGH-FLOW RATE FUEL INJECTOR SETS, GEMS/Hotwire Land Rover) or you can google them (M-9593-C302) and find a deal/price you like - saw some for around $220 USD a set of 8

The subaru cleaner is an upper cylinder cleaner for cleaning out the soft carbon build up inside the combustion chambers. There is plenty of others out there that claim to do the same trick but the subaru one is the only one ive found other than the genuine Carbon Clean brand that goes with the Carbon Clean machine that gives a decent result. You can buy it at any subaru dealer that has a parts shop attached, I think the retail price is $18 a can roughly.

For best results warm up the engine, remove the spark plugs and fill the cylinders, re fit the spark plugs and start after about five minutes, it will cough and not want to start but persist and it will run. After its had its spak attack and is running reasonable again spray the rest of the can directly into the throttle body with the engine running, you will have to keep the revs up as the maf will have a s**t due to the un metered air at the throttle body. As the can starts to run low try to stall the engine by letting it idle and continuing to spray the cleaner in. Let it sit for about another five minutes and then take it for a hard drive.

Caution there will be a LOT of smoke out the exhaust as the engine burns out all the old carbon deposits.

The injectors I will trial are the bosch 0 280 155 844, ( au falcon), they are roughly the same flow rate as the rangie ones but with much nicer atomization. I should have them in by the end of the week and will keep posted to the results.

The oxy sensors were $184 + gst but you will have to give the vin of you vehicle as they are non normal oxy's, they have a different make for different models and there is no universal oxy for them.

If you are going to replace the oxy's and do the carbon clean, do the clean first. The clean should not affect the oxy's and should clean the old ones anyway as it goes through, but I've always preferred not to run it over new sensors.

    Cheers
    Mick

Thanks Mick. Do you run a Thor motor or a GEMS? as in are those injectors ok in a GEMS? Ill try the upper cylinder cleaner first. Then new plugs after. I took the car for a run after removing the unichip today and while the idle is rougher, the fuel economy seems to be getting better.

Good to hear you're getting some economy back, uni chip's are generally one of the best, but it all depends on you tuner, most tuners just tune full throttle and a quick run through the rev range. When you consider Ford spent over 2000hrs getting the tuning right for the ba falcon you can see why most will just put it in and send it out the door.

I've got a GEMS 4.0L, and the bosch injectors are just under 2 ohms different in the resistance, the gems being 16.4ohms and the bosch at 14.7.
the management should handle the different resistance with no problems.
I'll let you all know how the new injectors go when i get them.

    cheers

Didn`t they used to call this stuff Red-x? On one of my cars many years ago I had a bottle set up with a pump and a switch on the dash enabling a smoke screen at will

Just ordered Boge shocks from British parts in the UK. $286 including delivery in 3-4 days. Happy with that...

Fuel economy only slightly better. Will get the cylinder cleaner. Are there NGK plugs suitable or just the Champion ones?
