My Dad used to talk about knee action shock absorbers on the family Chev. Late 30's Chev I think.

Almost It depends on the severity of the Wet season and where you really dare to travel.

Sometimes the ground looks solid enough to drive over until the top layer, or crust, is broken. Then vehicle sinks into the mud and the result is the sloppy mess which is posted above.

It takes a few hours of digging and swearing and constructing extraction sections to get the vehicles from this type of top end mud bog..and it is something you really don't want to find yourself in if you don't need to be.

However, for those who live in the Top End, it is probably something they have to put up with each year.

When I grew up on Marrakai Station outside Darwin I remember being out there a bit early in the dry - We used to ride on the bullbar a lot, dad used us as a depth guage..... I recall seeing crystal clear water coming up through the ground around the tyres and thinking "That look a bit funny". Not long after the Nissan broke through and tipped on its' side. My Mum was pretty unhappy having to get out the drivers window and it took a week to get the vehicle out. We kids had abandoned ship as it went over sideways.

    Casper still going strong

We have been visiting Sharon and Alfred, our daughter and son-in-law recently and whilst there we carried out the annual maintenance on their 130 Casper. This Defender really does the hard yards and it hasn't seen on a tar road for years.

It has been almost 4 years since the build and the car has been very reliable.

Other than the usual grease and oil change, and all the checks, the only repairs this year were the replacing of a hazard switch (indicators not working), replace the wiper motor park switch, replace a broken pin on the front brake pads and repaid a broken main earth from the chassis to the gearbox.

We also replaced the batteries as they were getting down to about 50% capacity.

We didn't take a lot of pics, but here are a few.

Clearing the track to the beach at Warrinyin after the wet season.

Making a track to the beach, past a swamp. Sharon is towing Alfreds quad and we are towing our boat.
