The old CJ6 jeeps weren't all that flash.3spd gearbox, weak front end etc etc. They were quite capable while they stayed in one piece, but tended to fall apart before they reached the end of the production line.I never saw them actually do much offroading in them on film either.
As John pointed out, They did tend to overload the Landies somewhat considering the terrain they intended to cross. Why they used to cart the dead weight of that useless Willys Mule around on the trayback Landy baffles me.They were only designed and useful for urban warfare, for ammo resupply and retreiving casualties.
    wagoo.

So you want to swap the 101 for AYI

The 101 would do well here, go right up to that fence and carry lots of post Should also pull that trailer with the backhoe

Yea, back on topic.... BTW, dont mind the facts, but, where are the jeeps now?

Also enjoy other members experiences over the years. I don't mind the past quotes as relevant to the period of time.

On over loading and breakage, if you look at the films and the now rear diff, it has a sals Quite a tough unit and would have been expensive in its day. Not sure if Leylands fitted it etc.

Most of all, Mal is now very interested in the vehicles future.
There is a lot more to this as our local editor made contact with Mal and Lorain. May involve a book if we find the nerves to have a crack.

    Right back on topic.....

On designer stuff, is a hard call, was painted AFAIK, but thinking sticker would be easier with this partial restoration as may have to replace the door skins if I bugger up wile removal and repairing the frames.

Another good member has offered a 6cyl bulk head to help repair this one.
    Thanks Dennis.

I am currently scanning a lot of my old slides. I came across this one, which may be of interest to those looking at this thread. It was taken in the camp I was in charge of in 1966 in the middle of the Simpson Desert.

Fantastic. I have just, literally, been watching a DvD of the 2006 'remembrance' crossing and they had archive footage of the 1966 traverse.

No, I was actually not in the camp - I had met them at Old Andado the previous day, when they were going in and I was going out. See page 134 of "Where Dead Men Lie"! The photo was taken by one of my crew.

Re the photo at your camp John. Was that where they had to do extensive rewelding and reinforcing to the series 1 SWs rear crossmember, tow coupling etc? They asked the manager of the camp about spare diffs, but it was an all Toyota outfit?
    Wagoo.
