That looks goo to me. At least you know it is correct & can safely refit the cover.

If you fill the hand brake tube up with WD40 & leave to soke over night it should free up . It would pay you to spray down the side of the button also . That is the fuel strainer not the fuel pump you have bolted to the bulk head. I can't remember if the hand brake button is a screw on or an interferance fit onto the shaft I am sure some one on hear will know , the spring under it could be rusted also

    update

1 replacement timing cover found on facebook and purchased came off a holden 202 which to my relief was the same as my 186 and fitted, was unable to alum weld the old one but did try.

2 replaced inner oil ring as had new one with my gasket set, painted the timing cover and fitted into position

3 need to purchase a fan belt but used this rope as a temp guide, very hard to tell if its exactly fitted right or not. waiting on the fan pulley as well to arrive along with the brand new alternator to tee up the crank pulley. i did use the old alternator and seemed to line up ok for now

4 man handled the engine into position on the ground in prep for install. painted up some other small bits n pieces for the firewall.

once the engine is lifted into position i will remove the sump for painting and fitting new gasket, along with new oil.

    dirty job

1-3 the dirtiest job of them all is cleaning those damn springs, filthy as but out with the angle grinder and the sand paper head on, cleans up in no time... still needs a wire brush into the corners, i am not pulling springs all apart other then one which had the centre bolt snap. its just a quick clean up and paint ready to reinstall, front do require some bolts that hold the springs together will source them next...

tempted to remove one or two springs to lighten the load, damn those rear springs are heavy, worried the ride will be rough as, cant afford the parabolic springs otherwise would have gone that route...

    small update

my holden water pump pulley came in but was wrong with a deeper dish fowling on the pump, so sent back and looking for another

1-3. spring leafs cleaned with grinder (needed a new grinder got a ryobi from Bunnings - old one died), cleaned up and painted just the base as i saw it began surface rusting after cleaning and leaving overnight with rains.

    4. removed what seemed logical to me some additional leaf springs after removing the centre bolt holding the pack together. larger rear springs had one leaf each side taken out, fronts had 3 each side removed. should provide a more softer ride (hoping)

    5. got another parcel heater hoses x2 for the manifold which fitted, which was a relief.

just need to clean up the side of these springs so that i can paint them and prepare for installing. sourcing some U bolts now.

    small update

    1. finished my can of mat black paint in a spray can, wire brushed with cordless driver to get all the crap and surface rust beginning to form on the springs after my initial angle grinder clean. looks good to me. will grab another can of paint to finish off properly as i didn't want to run out of paint and have the metal exposed again in case of rain. happy with the way the springs have come up but still have the diffs to do.

returned my water pump pulley, didn't realise there were more then one type available. alternator is due to come in today. that's it.

Hi Joe, just be aware that the front rh inner ubolt may be different to the rest of the front u bolts. On s2 2a 3 the inner rh ubolt is squarer across the top and longer in length than the rest coz where it fits on the diff housing. Not sure on s1's. Cheers mate. Doing a great job there. Oh and there are 5 different 6 cyl Holden water pump pulleys. Early red motor, smaller bolt circle, later red motor, smaller bolt circle, HQ and up, red motor, larger bolt circle, Commodore red and blue motor, with larger water pump bearing and larger bolt circle, "deeper dish", and one double pulley, larger bolt circle "deep dish" ( for bigger water pump bearing," heavy duty", to stop the viscous fan hub pulling the bearing out of the pump). Don't get me started on pulley spacers. There are about 20 different thicknesses and 2 different bolt circle sizes. Just to confuse you mate...lol. Cheers Rod.

    small BIG update

thx Rod. pulleys will be a nightmare to match up then.

1-2. before and after engine install, got my son to help out and fitted into position from below, bit unconventional i know but it worked with no need for a engine hoist. engine mounts lightly tightened up from the top.

alternator has arrived so will go on next.
