Thread: Tiny bit excited

You are going well with the bows . Bit hard to tell from your photo , the horizontal bars should be squashed flat on the ends & bolt on the inside of the bows , they are usually held on with wing nuts. Rain always comes when you don't want it, I have been staining a deck this morning & it is quite overcast, I hope that it will rain but not until the stain is dry. We have not had any rain since end of January.

1. Its slow going but getting there, concentrated on the rear hoop, lining up vertically then cutting the ends off. I have riveted for now the centre piece of steel joining the two halves together and must say looks ok. Did have to add another bend to get the shape i was after.

2. Another view, might attempt the front hoop next then worry about joining the front and rear hoops together via that horizontal bars. Lots of cutting, grinding, measuring twice or three times to get it to look half decent.

1. driver side is perfectly aligned with the two hoops front and back, so happy here BUT...

2. the pass side is crap, lucky i have a spare hoop for the centre to rectify, angles are wrong, hours of work for something so simple but the rains didn't allow me to open up the garage door but this can be fixed with a newer piece. happy so far but more work to go yet.

more thinking time needed to sort this one out...

Its all doable but very time consuming work, needs more checking before the final welding of the two halves but seems like a nice fit. Would love to throw on the canvas but don't want to get that dirty and with this rain its almost impossible to work or make any progress. Still have the horizontal bars to sort out, just needs the ends squashed and some bolts nut sorted. Will work towards the horizontal bars next then throw the canvas on to see if its all good enough or not. buggered today

looks better than new

1. start on the horizontal bars, thankfully only two to deal with, but here is a start

2. my torch is prob not hot enough to make it easier but it got there in the end, i tried a combination of squeezing in the vice and hammering

3. rounded off the ends, drilled some pilot holes just need to buy some bolts/nuts for them to be secured to the frame

4. time for the canvas, unboxed and laid to see how it all fits, not too bad, it is missing the middle bow at the top so the canvas is not sitting properly

5. other side of the canvas, surprised they do line up well with the ropes latching onto the sides either side

6. inspecting the canvas with one side open, loving the look, once that damn gearbox is sorted can get a better pic with it outside the garage. slowly making progress and seems to me I am finally moving fwd with this project.

My next project today was to fit the horizontal bars - done.

Then the dilemma with the front windscreen as i don't have the proper S1 windscreen frame (maybe mine is a S2 or S3) and does not have the protruding rods on the front to hook over the canvas. So needed to come up with a plan. My frame had already been drilled and was thinking to make up brackets to fix to already existing holes, BUT then came up with the painful idea of drilling more holes (two-three holes already lined up with the canvas as was) and securing these plastic bits then screwing into the frame. The inner holes needed to be drilled to a bigger diameter hole then screw into frame, slide over the canvas and job done. Yes its not 100 per cent original but then again neither is the holden but its another job sorted and kinda looks original to the untrained eye. I don't mind the look.
