For the chassis number try the top of the RH chassis rail inside the engine bay.

I note from the pictures that it appears to have been converted to fully floating rear axle using spacers so that the Series 2 axles can be used - but it is possible, particularly if this is only on one side, that it is not a conversion, but factory floating axle, but a replacement Series 2 half axle. (Series 1 full floating half axles are made from unobtainium). If it is a factory fitting, it just about has to be a 1958 model, maybe late 1957.

As always, thanks JDNSW. I will have a look on the weekend.

When you say top RH - standing at the front of the vehicle, looking towards the back - the RH side is the passenger side. Correct?

If so - I have already looked there, where the front brake line turns towards the wheel cylinder. On my ‘54 that is where the chassis number is - but it isn’t there on this vehicle. Paddock Find 107

No, I meant RH from the driver's point of view. I have a vague memory that some were stamped there.

There are two possible issues - firstly, Series 1s were assembled by different importers in each capital, at least initially, and I think that Annand and Thompson continued to do so into Series 2 production. The numbers were stamped by the assembler, and they were not consistent with where they did it even internally. You have to remember that this was a time when not every car had a chassis number - the engine number was the important number, so less care was taken with the chassis number.

Secondly, particularly if the chassis is either rusty or has been repainted, you may have to wire brush it back to bare metal to see the number, so it could be in one of the places you have looked.

I've never seen one that was stamped under the battery tray.

    More Pics and questions

    Hi All,

I took some more pictures of the S1 when I got home last night. I realise that it is often difficult to age any Series vehicle because they are modified over the life of the vehicle, but this one seems to have a mix and match of certain things on it... (Although I'm not a S1 expert).

First up - you can see the horn switch mounted on the steering wheel. Are the centre caps available?

Next I noticed that the S1 has door stays (like my other one) - but the firewall itself has a hole in it for the rod-style door stay on an S2??

Speed says 26,776 Miles - who knows if it is real or not?

Top of the gearbox - I started to have a look around for the serial number (still not found). Note the cute dipstick for the gearbox!

Here is the rear PTO lever:

I don't know enough about S1's - do they have a valance like a S2? And is it "flat"? (I know that on S2's they are round):

I was curious to see what these (factory looking) holes are in the front cross member? I've not seen this before:

    The front grill:

Both windows have these window locks - is this normal?

There are 2 wiper motors on the car - but they aren't the FW2 that I am used to:

Looking at the rear of the vehicle you can see that it has 2 badges on it. The passenger side is still installed, the drivers side isn't - although I found it in the boot. You can also see the place where the number plate lived.

It appears that it has had 2 lights installed on each side at the rear (brake & blinker). You can also see the reflector on the bottom left:

The bonnet has the rectangular rubber stops for the spare - my other S1 has round stops:

The floor pan was a real pain to remove - it is ONE SOLID piece that looks factory.. In an S2 onwards it is 3 pieces (drivers floor, passenger floor, gearbox cowling):

Petrol tank - the previous owner thinks that it's "new" - but I haven't cleaned anything up yet:

    Indicator stalk:

    Vent openers:

It's very straight - in the middle of this picture is that a repair panel OR standard?

JDNSW - both sides of the rear axle look to be the same too me.

    Cheers,
    GG.

WOW , that is a straight vehicle that is a good find & free that's a bonus , Lucky Boy . From the looks of the front X member & bump bar it had a Capstan winch fitted at some time. If you go back to were it came from you may find the winch laying in a shed .

    • Answers to some of your questions.
    • Hornpush............ .......I did manage to pick up a suitable centre at a swap meet
    • Hole in firewall.... .......I've only ever seen S1 88/109 firewalls with that hole.
    • Valance .....................Series 1's didn't have them.
    • Tubes in crossm. .......Tubes for capstan winch
    • Window locks ............Home made
    • Tub .........................The holes for the taillights are for pork pie lamps. (later than 54)
    • Bonnet .....................I've only ever seen the spare tyre support rubbers arranged in + form on 86/107 54 models. (X on later models) The square blocks are correct.
    • Floor .......................The one piece floor is correct The fact that you managed to remove it means that a Series 1 hand brake lever is fitted.
    • Tub side ..................The vertical strip is original.
    • Wind screen wipers...Not original

Sorry I only answer questions I can substantiate with pictures, or my own experience. Now is probably the time to buy a S1 parts catalogue and the book ORIGINAL LAND ROVER SERIES 1 by James Taylor

Speed says 26,776 Miles – who knows if it is real or not?

That is quite fast, even for a Series 1.

    Sorry, not helping am I?

    As BSF says -

The hole in the glovebox side on 2a was to let the water out, nothing to do with the door check. All door checks on Series 1 are aftermarket except on station wagons. I have not noticed whether the hole exists on S1, but could have been introduced during production.

Speedo only has 5 digits, which means it has probably been round the clock at least once (add 100,000miles), although there is a slight chance it is genuine.

Gearbox dipstick is standard for S1, serial should be on the sloping bit on the RH side near where it mates with the T/C

No valance on S1, those holes in the crossmember are for a winch (doesn't mean it was ever fitted).

Wiper motors are replacements - and it was almost certainly sold with only one.

Indicators were almost never fitted originally to any S1 in this country, and if they were, would have been dealer installed - whatever they could get easily. Most likely retrofitted when indicators became a legal substitute for hand signals in the late fifties.

Have you any idea when it went out of use? It looks to have been well looked after for a long time, with improvements made such as the fully floating axle conversion, and non-original wiper motors. Also, does not look very knocked about considering its age.
