BTW, a reliable bitser is of much more use than a 'seen one seen them all' restored L/R.

I had a telephone call during the week "I've got a Series I that I have to get rid of - are you interested?"

I don't really have the room, and I've got plenty of projects already - but I had to save it.

I left home at 7am on Saturday and the day didn't exactly go as planned - the winch handle for the trailer was missing. This meant that I had to winch the vehicle up on the trailer using an adjustable spanner.. I got there in the end but it was fun.

And here is the paddock find:

The guard is in the tub:

PTO - it turns over by hand:

    Engine - is it a 2.0 ltr?

    More pics

I went through the tub - the grill, front guard, some lights and a lot of branches are in there..

    Front wheeling hubs:

The interior - I think that the seats have been recovered, they look good:

    Heater:

The only bad part that I have found so far is - the top of the firewall:

I have parked the vehicle up for now - at least it is under cover and out of the weather.

The problems that I found on initial inspection:

    * Rust on the top rail of the firewall
    * Wiring - new wiring harness required
    * At least one wheel stud has sheared off
    * Missing wheel nuts
    * Paint - somebody has started to strip the paint off with a wire brush I rekon.

The steering wheel has the horn button on it - although the centre cap is broken...

It will be a good project but a big one in my eyes..

    Cheers,
    GG.

Had this very discussion with someone the other day. "working Bitser's" we reckon are far more desirable than one that looks like its just come off the showroom floor,, Not to take anything away from those that have spent hours upon hours restoring, but it leaves us too afraid something will mark it, but a bitser, well, its just another trophy scar eh?

    Tom,

Nice find, especially considering the panel condition.

Mine has the rubber blocks on the bonnet the same as yours.

Chassis number on mine is on top of the passenger side dumb iron just behind where the bumper mounts although as mentioned it varies depending on the CKD assembler. Yours has a number on the side of the passenger side dumb iron but not long enough to be a chassis number unless the rest is hidden.

Horn button is normally broken where people lever it to get it off, mine is broken in almost exactly the same spot as yours. It still works so I left it as is.

You just need to decide where this fits in the grand scheme of things and which vehicle now takes priority. I flit between a couple of vehicles and never seem to be really moving forward......

    Thanks for everyone’s replies.

The current project is the Freelander.

    Next - probably the ‘54 S1.

After that? Hmm? It might be easier to do the 107” or I might be tired of Series and start on the 2 Door Rangie....

Back to the Freelander for now... Paddock Find 107Paddock Find 107

Not bad at all. It must look like a Grand Final Car Park around your way.

My S2A took just under one year so can appreciate the effort you have put in.

I note from the pictures that it appears to have been converted to fully floating rear axle using spacers so that the Series 2 axles can be used - but it is possible, particularly if this is only on one side, that it is not a conversion, but factory floating axle, but a replacement Series 2 half axle. (Series 1 full floating half axles are made from unobtainium). If it is a factory fitting, it just about has to be a 1958 model, maybe late 1957.
Definitely a 107, so it has to be '55 or earlier John.

Holes in front cross member are factory and are for the capstan winch mount and no, Series 1's had no valance.
