    Good morning on the landy yesterday!
    Took the springs off the axels, the threads were damaged so ended up with the grinder and cutting disc. Got the 2nd engine on the stand ready to strip over Christmas, going to use all the bits from the first engine and then strip the 1st engine just to see what we have in good condition.
    Everything is now off the chassis apart from the steering relay which is now being soaked with penetrating oil, that's a job for next weekend!

    With that steering relay, although I belted mine with a mallet to get it going, I wound up levering it out with a prybar under the top casing. I'd suggest trying that route to start with. Once I got the casing above the brackets it's bolted to, I used a block of wood and the mallet to twist it side to side and that made a big difference. Oh, and lots and lots of penetrating oil over a week or so - you're not fighting rust, you're fighting fine dust that's got in there and compacted.

    Have fun and report how you did it, it's interesting to have two dismantlers face the same nastiness so close together.

    Mine got a short week of soaking... because I'm lazy.
    I wound up with puddles of WD40 under the vehicle, not because it was seeping through, but because it'd flow off the up and down the chassis.

    Worth persevering. Here's a picture of mine once I got it out.



    You can see it's well and truly wet and that build up of muck is all dirt, no rust.

    Don't forget to take the bottom cover off, it grips the relay quite tightly - goodness knows how the dust gets in there. Someone else waited until he'd turned the chassis upside down so he could bash downwards - worth giving it a think if nothing else.

    Hi Mate,


    Yes I've turned the chassis upside down and the oil is soaking nice, I have a press on there at the moment and one of my lads turns it half a turn every 30 minutes as well as soaking it.
    Saying that we've broken one press by being far too impatient!


    I'll take a picture and post it up at some point today.

    Well I must say that after reading every ones threads regarding the removal of the steering relay I did think to myself that it can't be that hard! So after two weeks of soaking, pulling, pushing, pressing, fire and finally hitting I am glad to report that its finally come out!


    I will need a replacement if anyone has one knocking about, saying that a new one is cheap from the UK.


    So I tried using a pulling tool, tried a hammer with a piece of wood, tried a week of soaking it every two hours with penetrating oil even tried using a the weight of a machine to press it out!





    In the end and after so many failed attempts I held a large socket on an extension bar over the rely while one of my lads use a sledge hammer, in the end its come out but even then it too a lot of effort!

    Just to let you know, we won't be going in work today, I got my lad a little job for the school holidays. He's actually working 10 hours a day in a powder coaters doing the jobs that everybody hates, we have agreed that the money that he makes 1/2 he saves and the rest he can spend, I'll drop the chassis off on Monday and he can spend his money getting it blasted and primed!


    Ho Hars it will be with you towards the end of next weeks.

    Stubborn little monkeys aren't they. I still love the workshop manual's description which is basically, undo bolts, remove relay
    Glad it's out. Why the replacement? Did you damage yours or was it damaged before hand?

    Having a tame sand blaster in the family could prove useful (gotta get something back for all the tears raising the devils - mine's a personal trainer but I've no interest in gyms or pain )
