Thanks for in put guys will try a jury rigged earth wire with a couple of alligator clips and see what happens
did a 50 mile trip today just to see what happened.......basically nothing everything held together
50 miles being quiet a chunk of the trip to Cooma coming up, gunna stretch it a bit weather permitting (no roofbut my wipers work
)next Friday by driving to Orbost as I go there every Friday anyway. Will try and tee it up with local tyre joint for a wheel alignment while I'm there.

Seems the Otter switch was used in some vehicles to turn on the electric fan.
with that in mind they may have different temperature settings.
I think yours has failed or lost it's earth connection.
