Quick update, random rear vision mirror installed, windscreen wiper motors installed. Waiting on a new front propshaft and swivel balls to arrive, once they are fitted and a couple of oil leaks fixed up I think it will be time to take her in somewhere and see if she is ready for rego!

Oh and of course the speedo isn't working. Seems to move if I manually spin it in the rear, and the cable seems to be spinning, but they aren't working together.... Will pull it all out and check it over the weekend.

    Exciting times!

May be a problem with the speedo drive or gear in the gear box. Also check the square ends on the cable are not worn & the sq in the back of the speedo & drive.

You will need the speedo working for RWC.

In vic you won't if it's that old, it's like after 80 something it needs to be working. I was surprised when my xf falcon passed without it.

That states that the speedo as well as working must be a metric speedo prier to 1988 they had to have a working speedo it could be a imperial speedo or one marked in mph & kph. Yhe only exemption were veterans where they may not have had a speedo. That is the way it was when I working as a motor mechanic & had a RWC licence.

Dosnt say anything at all about a car prior to 88.
There's another form that elaborates it, but its pretty foggy still. I've taken 2 cars without a speedo through RWC older than 88 and got away with it, and they picked on other stuff which was crap. Maybe they just let me get away with it...

Replaced a few of those little cogs in the cluster on many cars, never a series though...dont even know if the part is available. Everyone seems to be getting those custom ones online for their series I think they are GPS. From memory mine worked before I tore the s3 down but I think ill be doing the same thing and getting a new one online.

When I recently tried to get a RWC (in Victoria) for my ‘90 Range Rover - the ONLY thing that it failed on was the Speedo..

When you drove the car, the speedo didn’t work until you hit approximately 40kmh - after that it was fine (I checked it against a GPS unit).

Ayway - I was hoping that the mechanic wouldn’t notice - I thought “he will go for a drive, by the time he leaves his workshop and gets out on the road, he won’t even notice..”

Well - he did notice, and failed me.... Bought a series2... I think.

I had read that a car of that age wasn't required to have a speedo, but I thought if one was fitted it needed to work. I am unsure where I got that idea from though. The cable is new and spins as the car moves. If I stick a small screwdriver into the ass of the speedo and spin it quickly I get movement of the speedo. I may be needing to spin is much faster than normal though due to wear, I have no idea.

If I don't need a speedo ill be keeping the current one and using my phone as a speedo, if it turns out I need one Ill be getting one of those customisable GPS ones mentioned
