Thread: Help with Thermostat Housings and Thermostats

Only thing u have too look out for is the top and bottom gaskets are different. The wider gasket goes on the bottom the narrower gasket goes on top. O ring goes on top of the thermostat.

You need to run a thermostat to block off the bypass when hot, otherwise engine will run hot ( as you have noticed).
Maybe yours does not take the sleeved thermostat, but the other type, GTS109, shown in the diagram provided by 67hardtop.
I think your fan is on the right way, as most engines run clockwise looking from the front.

Fans don't change direction when you flip them over, they just become hideously inefficient at moving air. The direction of the curve in the blades is important!

Very good links above, and helps to understand how it all works. However all of them, and Rod's pics above, refer to the 2.25 engine.

There actually was one of these bellows(?) type in there when I pulled it down, I threw it in the bin... I mean, how hard is it to buy a new thermo, am I right??



From one of the links, and from memory I'm pretty sure I have the housing on the left, suggesting I could use a skirted thermo GTS109 common to S2a & S3(2.25lt). Many vendors list these.

Has anyone used this skirted thermo on a 2lt?

Will the skirt block the bypass orifice correctly? The bottom housing is the one in the diagram above.
I'll pull it down again this weekend if I get time (lots of cleaning up to do first after yesterdays storm...), and have a look but if anyone runs one of these successfully with this bottom block, I'd like to hear about it.
