Well been out the last couple of days playing with the front diff. Looks like im going to have to replace the swivel pin housings YAY not..
Heres some pics anyway OH & some questions..

Anyone know what these numbers are for or mean.

Is this a diff center from a range rover as it has the flat bit on bottom where the steering bracket bolts.

Hope these still have enough meet on them to be machined.

What is the go with this the green one had a little ball thing that was flogged out so i brought a brass ball which i soldered on over it to fix.But this one looks like there are solid & machined to the corect diameter so how can one fix this as its starting to look square..

Im guessing this R means Rover.

I have know idea what these mean.

The axles have a little wear on them so i mite replace if there not to expensive.

OK now i need to know if i count the teeth on the ring & pinion gear will someone be able to tell me the ratio, Im just worried that if it is out of a range rover or something else the ratio mite be differant..I'll count them tomorrow I'll also hopefully get to count the rear one aswell..

I also got some gaskets & seals today.

Got these last week full engine gasket kit..

So thats where i am at the moment..

I didnt realise the differant ends on the axles it has the fine spline on the drive end but the diff center end is 10 spline i thought that if had fine spline at drive end the diff center end would of been the same..seems not .ya learn something new everyday with a bloody landrover..I know the salisbury are the same each end ..Well mine are..

Also i have never rebuilt a frontend before the swivels i meen..is it hard they look straight forward BUT i dont have a spring tensioner to measure the corect tension on the swivels when you pull it ..Nor do i know where to get one ..Are the top bushes pressed in ??

Hey Banjo you should be able to pick up a spring balance at bunnings or any good hardware, even a fishing shop, I used my fishing multi tool which has the spring scale up to 12kg for tensioning, a bottle opener for when things get a bit hairy and a fishing knife for when you have REALLY had enough!

As for your front diff, mine is the same and is original as far as I'm aware, it has the flat plate with bolt holes on the bottom, maybe they used some common parts?

The swivel bushes are pressed in but you may not need to replace them.

Check the workshop manual and then strip yours to inspect it; it may only need some shims removed to get the correct pre-load on the swivels,

Well did a bit more today .. got the other swivel balls out & cleaned em up & did a bit more painting Got some more gaskets aswell..
    Heres the pics..

    Isnt it pretty

These are the gaskets i got today

Ok now the swivel balls that where on the front diff wen i got it are good & RUSTY to far gone for my liking so i have these that i had off an old diff..These do have some rust & pitting but nowhere as much as the origanals...The pins out of that diff are rusty & very mucky so was thinking of using the origanal pins & outer housing on theses balls..But the shimes are all good & plenty of them.
Anyway here some pics of the ones i want to use on the diff with the other bits off that origanal diff..WHAT do use recon ??????

Im a bit concerned about this barring race tho..

Hey im open to all advise guys ...

I had a look in four wheel drives Spare parts catalogue today for other swivel balls & they have some reco ones for $165 each.??
The catalogue i have is number 33 i dont know how upto date it is.If someone has a newer one would be greatly appreciate if you could have a look for me...

    Banjo,
I was going to use reconditioned swivel-balls on my S1 but was put off the idea by someone who had bought some and found that they had been ground under-size; were not round; and leaked oil everywhere.

I bought cheap new ones, which promptly started to rust in a dry shed, until I smothered them with grease The expensive new ones were beyond my reach.

On my S3 I followed someone else's idea and de-rusted the old balls on a hefty wire brush; cleaned them and filled the pits with epoxy filler and sanded them back to an acceptable curve. Total cost $15

The most I have lost by doing it the el-cheapo way is a bit of time.

Inspect your swivel pins and bushes for wear marks and replace if the wear seems excessive i.e. movement when assembled. Paddock in the UK have cheap parts. I agree about the bearing race being worn - replace bearing and race,

    Cheers Charlie
