Thanks mate, but I think we'll just go for one or the other.

Not sure how good those welds are!!

G'day all, back in Wagga finally and have been reaquainting myself with Bella!

Finished off the engine crane and got the 'box out with the help of a willing apprentice
    http://

    http://

    Then lifted the engine out

    http://

The engine crane held together, but I need to reinforce the arm above the jack as it had quite a bend in it and some nervous onlookers.

Having the engine out of the way gave me plenty of access to finish removing the firewall

Now I guess I'll have a bit of a tidy up in the shed and then start removing the axles and springs.

    Thats it for now,

    Marty

It looks as if your crane jib is made from 50 x 50mm steel - I would use some 75 x 50 x 5mm on its edge, with the truss on top as well,

Yeah mate, you're spot on, it's 50x50x3mm. I'm going to try to weld a piece of heavy angle across the top of the jacking point for now (I have a piece out the back) and if the onlookers are still nervous, I'll use 75x50x5mm

I am not sure where you are going to weld the angle but I doubt angle will be much use, unless it is in tension.

Be very careful if you lift a Rover engine again, as they are unreasonably heavy. The crane I made to go on my trailer was used to lift two 6 cyl engines without any fuss, but a 4 cyl S3 engine managed to break it

After I changed my jocks I modified my design

Stripped a bit more off the chassis today.

Got the bullbar, front bumper and capstan winch off,

Unfortunately, Bella revealed a little secret. The front cross member is quite rusted where crud has been trapped against the capstan plate,

Hopefully start getting the springs off tomorrow,
    cheers for now,
    Marty

as long as that is all the rot you have to contend with up front you have minimal problems, i had the same rot patch along with both dumb irons, all rebuilt, not replaced

Thanks NiteMare, I don't think there are any more chassis surprises coming up (although I haven't got the shackle bushes out yet- something I have been using my best procrastinating skills on).

I notice your dumb irons have the same little plate on the front as mine, is this a well practised after thought, or genuine Land Rover, just that mine look very "tacked on"?
