See from manual, should be a dust cover above top column bearing. Also on mine, the spring that hold the indicator cancel up, with the two lugs into the steering wheel, Bears straight onto the bearing.
Am I also missing some kind of thrust bearing, on top of the dust seal ????
Also the upper column bracket, is rubber mounted on the column. Is this normal ????
A slot on the upper column, which has a sprung clip cover, seems to align with a slot on the steering shaft. Some kind of steering lock, fitted to some models ????
    Thanks.

Ur spot on there. Thats for later models fitted with steering lock and key same as defender. Spring clip is fitted so nothing fouls the lock hole and jams the steering.

    Thanks.
Whilst waiting for some parts for the steering box, which is all painted ready to go,
I decided to start on the front Axle.
I am going to get balls blasted, JB weld, sand and paint. Any hint on paint. see some use por15. it it available in AU.
My Fergy Grey, seems to be a hard enamel paint, which I could bake.
I noticed many post saved on swivel rebuild had photo bucket photos, which are now 'blank'
Also discovered another UK, forum, Landrovernet.com, I enjoyed reading has gone.
The front axle, make more sense now working on it.
Roller bearings seem ok. Bush pin has 1/2 mm of wear on the pin. don't know how much the bush has worn. Thought someone had tweeked the play with a flat disk, till I read the manual.
Should the lower bearing be a tight/firm fit on its pin ????
NO oil in housing. quite clean. lots of grease on upper pin, lower bearing and axle bearing. Bit of oil,
but that may have leaked back past the axle/half shaft seal from diff ????
Universal had some oil/grease on it.
wondered why nothing was leaking out the ball/ seal.
Do you use the swivel seal plate to pull the large seal in, or may that bend the plate ????

With disbelief the rear springs are different, LH/RH, both had same number, and after pulling them apart, cleaning and re assembling them,
noticed in the manual, had listed there difference, height measurements.
So armed with tape measure, I went out and measured to the bump stop bracket to floor and spring to floor.
The other measured the same, bump stop bracket to floor, but spring to floor was 18mm less on the driver side.
Which is close to the manual difference. Do think one spring maybe 10/15 mm longer. Will Tape it in the daylight.
Yes I am a Disbeliefing dick head.
    Love the learning process

    1. Should be a firm fit, not a tight fit.

    2. The big seal should in fact have a small amount of play to allow it to be moved (with the retainer bolts loosened) so that it wipes the ball evenly. It should not need to be "pulled in".

They mostly are OK unless they have been run dry. (or with water or mus instead of oil!)

    Thanks John.
silicone sealant had been added. Large seal was fitted with some, plus other bits.
Was this used at the factory, or do you think some one has been in ????

The factory would not have used silicone here, but a lot of people do. However, you will note that the seal is rubber all over, so clamped against the swivel housing it should seal. Note, however, that this means the sealing surface must be clean and free from rust and burrs or other damage.
