Gearbox overhaul time - suggestions wanted.

Thought I'd run a new thread on this subject, rather than lump it in with the vehicle rebuild.

So, looking at starting to accumulate the parts I need for the gearbox rebuild. I've got a brand new Ashcroft high speed transfer case and gears for the back end, and want to make the box and TC as good as (or better than) new, like everything else being rebuilt on this project.

So, assuming the gears are all serviceable once I strip the box down, what parts am I going to need to replace, and what brand of bearings, etc would people recommend?

Looking for quality here, cost is less of a consideration. I want a leak free, ducks guts box when done.

    All comments and suggestions welcome.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

I got a 'kit' from the UK some time ago, the bearings were 'no name' but it did come with all the springs, seals & lock washers etc.
From memory the seal between the gearbox & transfer box was originally double lipped but difficult to replace so a single lip seal tends to be supplied.

Some bearings/seals you'll be able to get at a bearing stockist some will be specials, there were a couple of lists of bearings on the forum somewhere.
    You might need synchro rings.

Here's the kit I got PSK 1024 REP - Overhaul Kit, Series 3 Gearbox, Replacement specification

When I stripped my box, true to the PO's word, it had been reconditioned so only a couple of springs & one bearing had to be changed, details in my C240 thread.

Some info here Series Gearbox ID including a list of 2a gearbox bearing numbers.

    Hello Bacicat,

I found this link a while ago about removing and rebuilding a Series 3 box. I hope it is of some help to you? Series Land Rover Gearbox Rebuild. Plus here are a couple of YouTube clips about the same project [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yzUH1faG5Y[/ame] & Part Two. This does not show the job being finished and I cannot find a concluding Part 3 [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo-IXLSZ5R4[/ame]

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Hopefully your synchro hub is OK........ Land Rover Parts - GEARBOX - SERIES 3

Might be worth asking them what brand bearings they supply.

    G'day All,
When I fitted a Rocky Mountain O/D to the series2a I fitted a viton oil seal between the Main and Transfer gearbox. ( Actually I have fitted all the external seals with viton.) Viton handles the heat and gearoil better than neoprene and nitrile. OK they are 5 times more expensive at trade price but will last a lot longer.
