Good to see you have it sorted.
Cheers, Mick.
took the Ser3 for road worthy and have had a few failures.
steering box and drag link.
stop light and horn not working.
poor brake performance.
on the way home it died.
quick strip down Friday arvo and then of to Newcastle to purchase parts.
Didn't know I had the cyl head problem until I removed the radiator to get at the drag link.
old cyl head is a write off, I was worried about getting a replacement with out a core to exchange.
core plug let go, but I think it was because of the big cracks in 3 cyls.
New head from wrecker.
almost back together Sunday 4 pm. started at 11 am after a sleep in.

.
Wasn't planned but I thought I had better..
Fitted brand new radiator tonight and ran it until it warmed up.
Im over linning up the dozen+ mounting bolts.
Wasn't able to fit the fan cowl as it does not line up with the new radiator, but there is more than enough air flow for my use.
First time ive been able to adjust timing to factory settings and have the engine idle smooth. the exhaust now screams. Forgot to get a muffler but I did a big parts shop as it was. I have a lot of rewiring im planning.
I did a quick measure of the old head and the combustion chamber was more than 3 mm shallower than the replacement. Im guessing its had a lot of rides on the mill, judging by the cracks in the combustion chamber and exhaust port I guessing it wasn't looked at very well.
it has 2 burnt intake valves and the very white valve shown on number 4.
Good to see you have it sorted.
Cheers, Mick.

Looks like the " new" head has got 7:1 CR. Was the old one 8:1 ?
.W.
Sounds like the old head was a 7:1 (early) head that had been over-skimmed, leaving insufficient metal, or, possibly could it have been frost damage?

Freezing weather and no antifreeze - mostly the block is damaged, but I suppose the head is possible. I think over skimming an early head and/or overheating are more likely though, possibly some time ago.

you can see crack across no 4 between valves. similar but harder to see on no2.
similar width crack across the center exhaust port. 3 head bolts had sign of exposure-looks like grinding sparks.
I think they had long term over heating with this engine. Very common issue is that most locals expect engine issues with these, the old days you fitted a holden when you had a burnt valve.
It has been hot once when brake line cut through the lower hose.but I think this damage was from years of no thermostat and manifold air leaks.
have to measure the combustion chamber as it looks nothing like the replacement.
when I got this it was choked with carbon -being driven short distance. It has 56K on it now.
I replaced the carby and plugs when I got it. then when the hose burst I fitted a thermostat, and got the heater working. It lost a little coolant sometimes from the over flow but never from the radiator.
Discovered a contributing fault with the distributor.
you can see it hiding behind the oil filler tube.
it goes the wrong way----it has had a 25D clockwise distributor fitted.
I purchased a new 45D replacement Till I can find a better unit down the track. I like the older adjustable vac advance unit.
I might go down the programable path If I can be bothered.
