Dropped in to see how the engine machinist is getting on, the good news is everything should be done by this time next week, the bad news is the bill is about twice what I thought it would be! :(
The main reason for the cost blow out was to do with the screw in type aluminium core plugs in the block and head. Some, (or all?), of the core plugs in the head must have leaked at some stage as they had been peened to death to stop them leaking. Some were bad enough that they had to be ground out by hand before they were all re-tapped.
I was told I probably could have left them, but that left two problems, the first is that they could start leaking again. The second, and biggest, problem was that the head could not have been cleaned properly, and given that it had sat so long I was in dire need of a good clean, (in the cooling galleries).
At least at the end of it I will have a very fresh engine that should provide many more years of good service. Oh, and a lighter wallet! :angel:

Yep, I hear ya...
I should have mine back in a week or two as well. I expect the bill will be hefty - all barrels sleeved, new valve seats, various machining jobs etc...

Brake booster got overhauled by Perth Brake Parts, a good job was done, however many $$$ were spent, (less than a new genuine one, but more than an aftermarket one, so hopefully a good result).

The tank is an aftermarket (britpart) one, and unfortunately the filler neck is in the wrong spot. Whoever fitted it opted to "modify" the opening in the tub, (as shown by the socket that is the same size as the filler neck):

The tank was sandblasted inside and out, to clean it up and make it safe for cutting/welding. The filler neck was then cut out:

A spacer plate made, (the marker lines are for relocating the filler, it's inset on a slight angle so orientation was important)

Spacer and filler welded in, (hopefully in the right spot!). The MIG was a bit too hot, but I didn't want any pin holes, so it was melted on good! (Wish I had a TIG :( )

Fresh coat of gloss black, which nicely shows up the ripples in the top, it was distorted a bit already, and the welding didn't help. In reality the deflection is only a couple of mm.

I was given a NOS fuel sender, which was handy as the original was very badly corroded on the top. Probably something to do with it basically being a bowl, to make sure any water/mud was captured to ensure maximum corrosion speed. Looks like the sender was military surplus, as the number on the side appears to be a NSN, (NATO Store Number).

And finally a row of freshly sand blasted screws ready for a coat of paint. Sandblasting them was entertaining, but at $3-$4 each(!!) they were getting reused.

Thanks Charlie, will be doing that in the future! (In the end it's the same as before I started, so no harm done :) )
Put the hardware in the tank today, the old pickup got the bead blast/clear coat routine, and came up looking good as new, so happy with that. I also fitted the handbrake relay, getting the bolt in that pulls on the shaft going into the brake assembly is a right :censored: Thought I'd get it done during a spare 5mins at lunch. I was wrong!
