The wiper motor also got pulled apart to be inspected, cleaned, and painted. However the commutator and brushes are very worn, so I'll probably end up replacing it.

The commutator could do with dressing, but the brushes look to have plenty of life left - and could be replaced anyway. What I would check carefully though is the condition of the armature winding - this looks from the colour as if it has been overheated, although that could be only dust off the brushes. Or just the colour of the varnish, processed through a camera and a couple of computers, so the colour I see may not be real close to the original. Smell will tell you if it has been overheated. Apart from this, replacing the whole unit would, to me, be the act of someone to whom money is no object.

Thanks John, I'll have a closer look at the windings, nothing "jumped out" as being a concern when i looked at them. It doesn't really show in the picture but the commutator is worn on quite an angel, and probably more than half the copper would have to be removed to get it flat again.

Money certainly is a consideration, but a set of brushes, (RTC198) are about $35 - $40, (LR and aftermarket), and an OEM wiper motor complete is $75, hence my comment to replace it :)

The door frame is made from two pieces spot welded together.

I just got a couple of frames back from the sandblasters, looked OK when they were taken in but now the bottom edge is 'lacework' so I'll have to fit a repair panel.

Ah, thanks for that Colin! Might get away with just a skin for the drivers door, (although it might not be that much cheaper than a complete door :/ )

Perth Brake Parts is the only place in Perth worth going to; they can refurbish anything to do with brakes.

They also make hoses; sleeve cylinders; can make pipes, or supply you with the bits,

Be careful with a new wiper motor Tim; it is possibly a Chinese, or Indian one with doubtful longevity, let alone functionality.

Th classic car market is being flooded with cheap electrical bits, that are not fit-for-purpose,

Fair point, some of the "genuine Lucas" parts that I've ordered have the ever present "Made in China" on the box :( Though how you would make something worse than 1970's Lucas is beyond me :angel:

With yours and Johns advice ringing in my ears I am leaning towards putting the wiper motor back into service, (with a light skim of the commutator). It's the "Schrodinger's Box" question of what is more reliable, a part with 42 years worth of wear, or an OEM/Aftermarket part from questionable origin.

TIm, I dont think they do much good in a downpour anyway - so I wouldnt worry too much about efficiency.Judging by what you have done already - I would stick with what you have.

Much to Southern LR's, (local dealer), dismay I manage to put about 40k km's a year on the Puma, so don't be thinking I won't be using the S3! :D Rain or not!

(The wipers don't work on the Puma either :angel: )
