Thread: My 88" Series 3

Hi Tim.
I see from the wanted section that you are going to convert to hardtop.
If you have undercover parking for it I would go with a canvas tilt.I used to take the hardtop off my 88" in summer,it was great.
If I ever get another 88",its on the bucket list,I will be looking for a canvas lid.

Hi Andrew, yeah.... I've thought about going for a canvas top, and if a decent hard top doesn't come up it's what I'll most likely do.

My issue is the seat belts, the ones on it were rotten and chewed so I cut them off before shipping, so far I haven't found any replacement seat belts that mount behind the seats, only ones that hang from the B pillar.

I have a 109 Stage 1 that I am going to remove the hard top in summer. I have a bikini canvas roof already. I have the same issue re upper seat belt anchors. You can buy a bar that sits on top of the capping that provides the upper mount point. My intention is to have a hoop made up that in effect provides some roll over protection and also provides the upper seat belt mounting point. My intention is to have it made so it sits just inside the hard top roof profile, so I'll be able to leave it there permanently whether I am using the canvas or hard op roof....

Found a roof, sides and top tail gate for a reasonable price. The paint on it is cactus, but the panels are relatively dent free. Just need the car now!!

So..... still no car As of last Thursday it was sent off for cleaning, so I'll hopefully have it next week, (and slightly cleaner too!). In the mean time I've finished sandblasting the wheels, and disassembled the roof and sides.

On the subject of sandblasting, I've had problems with my one jamming the pickup tube, doesn't matter if the grit is used or brand new, (there is plenty of air, the workshop compressor will put out 60cfm, and has a drier). After a bit of looking on the internets I discovered some "higher end" units have a bleed valve on the suction hose to mix a bit of air in with the grit, so one 1.5mm hole in the suction pipe later and the unit was working much better!

As I posted earlier, the roof and sides I picked up are a bit ropey, having sat outside for many years, but did come with a free lifting strap!





And the roof even has some mad speakers fitted!



The rubber in the side panels was practically fossilised, and required much digging and scraping with a screwdriver to remove.

I managed to get one round of paint stripping done on the roof and side panel, but ran out of stripper and time to get them completely done.



The paint on the roof has proven to be much more stubborn than on the side panels. It looks like there are a couple of coats on there, and after the first coat of stripper some earlier "repair work" is showing itself.



Back to sandblasting, whilst tedious, and sometimes frustrating, it can be quite rewarding when comparing before and afters!

Tell me more about the sandblaster fix, I'm having the same problems, new sand or old, sometimes it works well, sometimes it takes ten minutes to do an inch...

Hi OneOff, I just drilled a 1.5mm hole at the top of the metal suction tube, (before the flexible hose). Seemed to be enough to let a bit of air in, otherwise the grit seemed to surge up the hose before the gun and pack itself in.
