A Quality System can't prevent defects if it isn't implemented. Also, given the number of vehicles in the range and the sales volumes of said vehicles, it's not surprising that they have had recalls "more than every other manufacturer combined" (though I can't find a specific evidence of this), 3.8 million vehicles for the floor mat problem, has there even been 3.8 million Defenders built since 1948? Perhaps if the figures were as a proportion or an index it'd be a little bit more useful than headline grabbing gross figures.
Since when does production numbers equal quality?,it does matter if you make 20 dodgy vehicles or in Tojo case about 12 million they are dodgy.LR have had recalls over the years but I don't ever remember them having ones like wheels falling off, faulty brakes, faulty steering, bursting into flames, bonnets flying open etc.Tojo's recalls have been life threatening,in the US 50 people have died, how many other manufacturers have that on there CV?.You can claim all the quality you want but thems are the facts. I haven't said production numbers equal quality. I said it's unsurprising that they have had more recalls "than all manufacturers put together" given how many different vehicles they make and the numbers.

Sadly, 'soul' will not save you when you're diff decides to pack up half way into an expedition along the Madigan Line or Canning Stock Route.

Come on guys, lets not chew into each other.
I don't think this thread is going anywhere constructive.

I'm not chewing into Pat at all. He has given me, and many other people very valuable advice, I have absolutely no reason to make it personal. Everyone is different and a bit of tolerance either way can get over that.

It may be seen that way because I hold the opposite view and I really don't care what I drive provided it looks good, has a proper 4wd system and does the job. Having said all that, if I genuinely thought that Land Rovers were bottom end quality, I'd have gotten something else long ago. Any thread headed "LR vs Toyota" isn't going to go anywhere constructive!

There's plenty of evidence on here of Tdi big end problems, even with good maintenance (like in the case of rick130), but Isuzu engines seem to lack this problem. It seems to me that the Tdi would have an inherent weakness in that regard, as did Toyota's 1HD-T.

That would suggest that maintenance isn't the biggest determiner of whether an engine will last, perhaps it was flawed at the design stage.
Do we brand all Tdi's with the same brush because of one?.Using the wrong grade of oil, reving at cold start-up,driving away as soon as the motor fires and not having enough oil or pump pressure problems will all cause bigend problems. There is a reason taxi engines clock up a million trouble free K's.
