Made up a bracket to squeeze the adjusters in the head.
Compression is back and also fitter new glow plugs.
Started easier but still with coughed a bit with loads of white smoke.
Power off turbo is as it was before but new turbo shows up well.
One thing though. I might have put the injectors back into the head in reverse order.
Still bothers me about the white smoke on start up.
    Fuel pressure?

this is some info about uk spec heads don't know if it applies in Australia?

    AFFECTED RANGE:
All Td5 derivatives within VIN ranges:
    Discovery Series II
    (02 Model Year)
    2A 736340 to 3A 793895
    Defender
    (02 Model Year)
    2A 622424 to 3A 647705
    SUBJECT:
    CYLINDER HEAD LOCATING DOWELS
    DETAIL:
Td5 engines fitted to vehicles in the above VIN range are fitted with plastic dowels
to locate the cylinder head onto the cylinder block.
Land Rover Engineering has introduced steel locating dowels from the following
    VIN numbers:
    Discovery Series II: 3A 793895
    Defender: 3A 647705
    INFORMATION:
If a cylinder head is removed from a vehicle in the above VIN range, the plastic
dowels must be replaced with new specification steel dowels, which are now
    available from Land Rover Parts.
CAUTION: Td5 derivatives prior to the above VIN ranges must not, under any
circumstances, be fitted with the new steel dowels. If steel dowels are fitted to
earlier engines, cylinder head cracking may result.

Thanks for that . Mine is a 1999 and was fitted with steel dowels two days ago.
The gasket kit was supplied by a well known Sunshine Coast, ( Queensland) land rover repairer who has been fitting heads since 1973. (You would reckon he would be sick of it by now).
I rang him to query the plastic/steel dowel thing and was told that every head they do is fitted with steel and never plastic. So there you go.
    Take your pick.

Just a thought, the injectors are programmed thru the ECU to a particular cylinder, AFAIK, if you put them back in the wrong order, they have to be reprogrammed. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Absolutely correct - if you have mixed up the injectors then the engine will run but very rough and blow smoke.

Also in reference to earlier post, who on earth ever fits plastic dowels any more?

Oil under car may be leaking/incorrectly fitted fuel regulator.
