Unfortunately I didn't see this thread until after I'd replaced mine with a genuine plug. I had used a Bearmach "quality" aftermarket plug but that lasted for about 10 months before it began leaking. The genuine plugs seem to have a far tighter fit when new than the aftermarket job did. The bearmach job pushed in quite easily with moderate finger pressure, but the LR part required application of considerable force to insert. I'm guessing that a genuine plug would be a better carrier for a replacement o-ring than the aftermarket alternatives.

    cheers

I am having permanent probs with this cam plug oil weeping. I tried Bearmach plug (went it quit easily) but after 1 month the oil started weeping again. So i bought a genuine LR plug. This went in much harder. I guess it has tighter tolerance that Bearmach. After about 3 months the oil started weeping again. Then I bought an oversized Viton O ring that was so tight that i almost had to hammer the plug in. After about two months i have an oil weeping again. It is driving me mad.

btw i also tried to various types of RTV to no avail.

Has anyone actually fixed this oil leak?

    Seal blank?

There are things called seal blanks available. Basically they're a steel plough covered with the rubber used on lip seals.. Is throwing away that plug with the leaky o ring and fitting a seal blank an option?

    Lightbulb

Fit the plug in with aviation gasket cement. The thing is never going to come out anyway unless you are pulling the motor apart.
Mine is done this way and it doesn't leak a drop.

    Cheers,

How often are people replacing the seal on this plug? My last seal has lasted all of 12 months before being completely flattened and leaking.
Is there something else I need to be looking into as to why the seals don't last or do I just put it down to a cheap oring? which I purchased from the local bearing shop

Just a note on this topic. I made an o ring to fit this plug using 5mm stock oring and 406 locktite to glue the oring together. I cut a few more out and will chuck them in the service box. Its a tight fit. Cant tell you how much the stock cost but you need about 200mm. 406 is about 10 bucks. I keep a bottle in the fridge. Great stuff.
