After reading all the posts on ur problem phil, the fuel usage is abnormal, Dad has a Defender with the Internatioal TDI 300 Motor in it, he was complaining that it is using more fuel than normal....

Took it in to a Turbo Expert and apparently the turbo is on its way out the waste gate was leaking and could not be repaired...

He has a boost gauge and its always running at 15psi...

He replaced it with a new one,

HUGE power increase (still on 15psi though...) and fuel economy is back to it used to be when new...

    maybe look at your turbo,

to me its not getting enough air into it, have you cleaned out ur Intercooler?

    cheers
    David

a tank is only worth 450klm to me round town, hwy or towing.
over the past 12months its gotten worse, was 550klm/tank..
and i also still cant get rid of the 730-810rpm engine miss/dip at idle.
this is the same for the factory ecu mapping and a BAS tune.

    so far ive replaced...
    MAF, OEM
CAS, OEM installed with and with out the spacer
    MAP, OEM
    AAP, x2 both OEM, 1 from a working TD5 and 1 from a wreck.
BOOST MODULATOR, OEM even tried it bypassed.
INJECTOR HARNESS, OEM modified for oil ingression.
second set of known ''good'' injectors. (yes coded with nanocom)
NEW OEM ECU (no oil at ecu plug or in old ecu.)(security done with nanocom)
the head has just been skimmed .006'' and the valves re seated due to broken plastic head dowls
    i had compression of 240-260psi per cylinder (TD5 i tested was 320psi)
tomorrow i will do another compression test and compare.
piston protrusion was on average .505mm = 1 hole gasket(same as original)
the head had its ports cleaned up, not quite match ported as did the turbo flange's.
the exhaust manifold has had the webs removed and been machined.
now im getting over boost, im hitting 1.40bar.... ive adjusted the rod out so much its a dog to drive under 60kph.
ive also fitted a known ''good'' turbo and wastegate actuator.
    and still the problems remain...
the timings correct and the injector preload is too.
its not using/making oil or water.
    fuel pressure is 4.0-4.3bar.
before the head was done my oil test showed 5% diesel dilution and a high reading of sillica (ultra blue gasket was used previously)

i have a good TD5 in the drive way to compare with and all the figures and values shown by nanocom are 99% the same D2 to D2!
both auto, both modified simmilar. mine has 255 70 R16's the other has 235 85 R16's 30 000 k's differance in odo readings, both EU3 motors. the other got 836klm to the low fuel light last tank.

my auto fluid and filter was done 5000k's ago, still looks clean dosnt smell burnt and there are no visible particles in the oil. the auto ecu has also been changed!!!
mine dosnt shift as well as as the other, mine hangs in first a little to long and can hesitate on shifts. ZF australia wont return my phone calls or answer my emails... great customer service...******...
and the other 2 auto shops tell me it cant be tested??? WTF..

so apart from replacing the speed sensor in the auto and the coolant temp sensor...there isnt too much i havnt done.

so if ANYone has ANY ideas im hear waiting for your input.

oh and the drive train has been looked at, ie, brakes dragging, bearings, tail shaft etc...all perfect.
After reading all the posts on ur problem phil
    except the first one

yes the IC has been flushed, its been run with both unifilter and OE paper air filter.

    cheers phil

damn how did i miss reading that.....

dude you have tried nearly everything...

Next thing I would look at is the wiring loom have you changed that ? (sorry if i missed reading that also)

another suggesting, is it possible that air is coming in after the airflow meter and before the intake of the tubro? ie oil breather pipe...

also on the inlet manifold could the gasket be leaking boost??

sorry if the questions have already be asked... i cant sleep when there is a problem with my D2, i will do everything to get to the bottom of it...

anyway... THANKS JC!! we have fixed the idle problem.!
apparently alot of the update D2's suffer from this issue from time to time and some get cured by an ecu upgrade and some get worse!! mine,, read worse

solution/test, fit an MSB ecu, thanks redback (and kerry) for the loan.. installed the MSB and the engine is compleatly different, neat, smooth exactly how the TD5 should be. so we flashed an early NNN fuel map on to my NNN ecu from the nanocoms map wizard and perfect!
thank god thats one issue out of the way, at least now i just have the auto to deal with. the new stock map hasnt had any improvement in the shift quality of the auto...and its so underpowered...need new tuned mapagain..

    finally getting somewhere

    cheers phil
    Hi Phil,

I have a td5 with this idle miss when you let the clutch out, can you tell me what a MSB ECU i sand where i can get you from.

    cheers

bronson, the MSB ECU is from D2 models 1999 to 2001/2, non flashable, after this it's an update D2a with the NNN ECU, or flashable ECU, from memory you have a non flashable MSB ECU with a TRS chip in yours??

    Hi Baz

you must have supersonic memory!! Yes thats correct and im still searching as to how I can over come this problem! Do you think that it could be a fault in my ecu by any chance??
This is the closest thread that I have read on the problem that I have , if its the same. Would love to hear from anyone out there that has thids happening to them.
I've noticed to that it also holds revs a little high between gear changes, that makes gear selection a little harder.

    Any thoughts please

    cheers bronson

    ive tried 3 ecu's, 2x nnn's and barrys msb.
ive also flashed an early map onto the nnn that removed the mis.
i feel its a software issue and not really an ecu problem.

    cheers phil

    Hi Phil

Did you have the same sort of miss that im experiencing???? What would you suggest needs to be done to fix this?? Should I have a look at a nnn ecu and a map from td5 inside?

    cheers

I'd say it is the TRS chip that is giving you the miss, I must be lucky as I've never had this miss, when all is good (ie)no oil in the harrness and so on.

If I was near you I would lend you my spare MSB ECU (has a B Davis chip) to see if it was the software in your ECU that is giving this miss.

At the moment I have a flashed NNN ECU with a TD5Alive upgrade in my D2, seems to be working really really well power wise at the moment and no miss, although mine is a manual D2.

We put my MSB ECU in Phils car and straight way you could tell, no miss at all at idle.
Also I have since been informed that there are 2 MSB ECUs, late 98(Aug/Sep to early (June/July)2000 and late Aug/Sep2000 to early June/July)2002, after this Aug/Sep comes the D2a update with the flashable NNN ECU COMPLICATED HEY

These dates are all build dates, not release dates (eg) a 2001 model D2 was built between Aug 2000 to July 2001.

Well Ive checked out the ecu via my laptop and have changed the accelerator from 3 track to 2 track. It has made a noticeable difference and seems to have gotten rid of the stutter, and the engine holding revs between gear changes.

Hope Ive hit the nail on the head.

    cheers

    Luke
