Yeah i think you are right about the timing cover bearing... I read the DIY fix link you posted & all i was thinking was 'Eeeish' its a South Africanism usually uttered whilst rubbing ones chin, commonly occurring when you have buried a land rover to its chassis & realising you have lent the jack to a friend.. or some such dilemma.
I will see how much the cover is first. There is a really good independent parts supplier who supplies genuine & aftermarket spares at a fraction of dealership prices.

is the $40 or so for a Ford Falcon water pump. When I costed the replacement timing cover it was >$550.
, angle grinder with 1 mm cutting disc and a vernier/rule to measure the viscous flange mounting face distance from the front of the casting. For me it was 10.5 mm.
Now you have me worried about masking a symptom...
