It is a March 94 Build if that helps identify if it should have originally been grease or oil based

I can't see how the bearings would be lubricated by oil? Shouldn't the swivel hubs be full of oil and the bearings packed with grease?
no thats a seal between hub and stub and the road

No, it's inside that part - where the axle runs through.

An update Disco? I think they were greased bearings but not 100% on that.
If the inner stub axle seal is removed, then oil can transfer from the swivel housing into the hub bearings. This is 'converting to oil fed'.

If you look in the Good Oil, there's a section there on this subject. I recently converted Dobbo's Defender front axle to oil fed bearings & drilled a feed hole in the stub axle (as in the GO) to help.

    Yes thats correct D1 update.

Definately a "normal" axle seal on the tube. Swivel hub contained oil (very unlikely it was from diff as diff oil clean, swivel oil contaminated) Bearing s appeared to maybe once have had some grease...... Thus they failed!

Sorry posted at the same time!

Yes that seal behind the needle roller bearing is there

Make yourself a cup of tea & check out the Good Oil:
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/5...ting-rest.html

All the info is in there if you want to convert to oil fed . You may as well while it's all apart if you can afford to have the car off the road for a couple of days.

How did you go with the cursed front axle?

And how did Dobbo convince you?

    He must have pictures.
