Busted the fuel cap on the Puma in my first attempt to open it. Luckily the dealer was still open and organised me a new one straight away. I was a bit panicky as I am driving to Qld tomorrow and need the cap to open. It isn't as robust as the TDi cap.

discovered that the footwells are rusted in a very difficult place to repair above the chassis with about 1" of clearance.
Also found that the clutch master cylinder bracket was completely full of mud. not only is the bracket itself almost rusted out, the bulkhead behind it rusted to crap as well.
everytime I look at this thing, I find more rust that has to be repaired.
anyone know how hard it is to remove/replace the footwell panel?
It would be much easier to repair off the car than it situ. I have a feeling that's what I'll be doing though :(
Welded the crack around the edge of the front diff pan on the 110 - again.
This involves jacking the chassis up to get full spring deflection, removing the panhard rod and drag link, and even then it is not very easy to get at. Could do a more satisfactory job by taking the front axle assembly off and stripping it - but that is a whole different level of enterprise.

I dropped by the metal fabricator to fix a minor issue with the alloy sheet they fitted to the canopy frame. Then went to total tools to buy a 52mm socket for the hub nut, a super sized shifting spanner (0 to 60mm), then onto the canvas bloke to talk through option for drop sides on the canopy. Happened to be side tracked at BCF for a folding bucket. The split pegs and a new fry pan caught my eye, so they came home with me too.
When I got home I used said shifting spanner to crack the retaining nut on the adjustable pan hard rod, adjusted the diff back to centre and do it all back up.
The delivery man gave me the airbag man coil rite helpers. I played with the bits and pieces and put it away for another day. I did a little flex test to see if the coils separated from the upper coil mount. About an inch of separation causing a bit of concern that the inner air bags will pinch the air hose and or the coil won't reseat at full articulation. I also noticed the coil compressed so much that the tyre rubs the upper coil mount. More things to sort out.

Used my winch to pull out the bent Toyota bulbar on my BIL's 80 series, after he swiped a tree with it at Emu Creek 4WD Park near Tabulum on Saturday. Winch is working so well it actually cracked a weld on the edge of the Toyota bulbar.
Defender was unmarked after a day of bashing around all but the modified tracks. I was impressed, particularly as it is still on the original General Grabber TRs and standard suspension.
The TC was brilliant and the low range in first was great. I had to keep forcing myself not to touch the brakes on steep descents and to let it just walk along by itself. Very counter-intuitive.
You really could just drive one of these out of the showroom and head off around Australia. Great stuff!
Changed out the diffs and transfer case oils today
I had an eventful couple of weeks on my holidays, we got bogged in our back yard in Brisbane after the big rain, a couple of weeks ago, (190 mm in a day). I was towing a heavy trailer into the back yard. We disconnected the trailer and left it there, and got ourselves out using the difflocks rear and center, plus a lot of boards and the shovel.
Lovely black soil, but add a lot of water to it and it's soft.
I noticed some axle oil sprayed onto the outside of my front rim, the little rubber hub cap had cracked from old age, I put new one on from my spares in a couple of minutes. It looked like an original, but maybe only 10 years old. :), I remember buying my spares years ago for, $5 each. Thats something i love about the landrover defender cheap durable parts.
The front drive splines etc inside were well lubed, shiny and clean.
I also picked up some market items from fellow aulro (ians). a complete R380 gearbox cooler (danilalan), and a spare bonnet with a wheel carrier on it, (ranger). very happy with both purchases, thanks guys cheers simmo:)
I have finally managed to replace the faulty abs sensor in the rear, I have a P38 with no warning lights or error messages, I am actually nervous driving it now, waiting for something to happen!
