Returned home from Yass, where I had returned the grandkids after the holidays.
Uneventful trip except! -
About 20k before Wellington I noted the auxiliary fuel tank I had been running on was near empty, so changed to the main tank. Just through Wellington I happened to glance at the gauge again, and forgetting that I had already switched, and also forgetting which way the tap went, changed tanks again. (In my defence I was concentrating on driving at 110kph, and passing the bloke who was only doing 100, which takes careful planning in the County on a busy two lane road!)
Five kilometres further on the engine started missing. Unfortunately, I was on an uphill, and the engine did not pick up before we ground to a stop, even though I rapidly switched back. Fortunately, it was fairly easy to prime, and restarted after a couple of turns as soon as the primer was pumping solid fuel. Did not loosen anything to bleed, as I have found this is not necessary. Missed a bit for perhaps twenty seconds and then ran smoothly.
After that little incident, the closest to a problem was having to follow a bloke at about 75kph for ten kilometres on the unsealed bit of road before he turned in, and earlier on the Lachlan Valley Way followed an 'L' plate (actually obeying their speed limit) for about twenty kilometres before managing to pass it.
Also was surprised to find major roadworks at the intersection of the Hume Freeway and the Booroowa Road did not rate a mention on "Live Traffic NSW", despite the fact that the freeway was restricted to one lane in each direction, and turning traffic and northbound freeway traffic controlled by a flagman. The first half kilometre of the Booroowa Rd was single lane, and when I was waiting to turn, the bank up almost reached far enough back to bring the freeway to a stop, something not very well thought out.

Yesterday, test drove the 2a after fitting a new float to the carburettor. Almost undriveable, clearly flooding. Removed the new float and tested it, found to be leaking worse than the one it replaced.
Fitted the float from a carburetter I got at a clearing sale some years ago (carburetter is unserviceable because of corroded emulsion block and seized throttle shaft).
Works well after that.

Bought a full set of lights for the s3 of bumtree really cheap. Britpart ones. I now know that they are not really a good light. All plastic sockets. I think the indicators will be ok but for the brake lights i might put led globes in as they dont get hot and wont melt the sockets. Anyway i Used all 4 indicators to replace the trailer ones that had been fitted. Looks better now. Thought id look into why the lh headlight was dull. Found a very small wire used for earthing the light. Also found the light socket had disintegrated behind the light. I fitted a spare one i had from an old s3 light panel i had lying around. Upgraded the earth points for all the l/h lights. Banged in a few rivets where there were broken ones. All good now. Need to fit a new seat belt to drivers side. Will do that when the day cools off a bit. Almost ready for all British day, Adelaide, feb 14. Maybe ill wash it too???
Prob not..

Polishing mine. This arvo I'm going to polish underneath the bonnet. I guess that makes me a bit fussy.
Yup...

Investigated an intermittent fuel starvation problem in the 2a. Suspecting rubbish in the tank, I started at the tank. But removing the drop pipe showed no problems.
So I put a vacuum gauge on the pipe from there and started the engine. About 5psi vacuum, and furthermore, it stayed the same for at least five minutes after stopping the engine.
Then turned my attention to the other end, removing the hose to the carburettor, intending to check the fuel pressure. This saw me holding in my hand about 20cm of hose, with an in-line filter in the middle. I looked closely at this, and noticed a problem.
Having had a paper in-line filter disintegrate a couple of years ago, and having spent a lot of time fishing little bits of paper out of the carburettor, I had replaced the paper filter with one that has a glass tube with a threaded centre having a nylon filter clamped against the end by a knurled nut and rubber washer. Fuel gets into the filter via a drilling in this threaded bit , cross drilled, and out via a similar arrangement at the other end.
The nut that holds the filter element was loose. It took me a few minutes to realise that it was also very free to move, and in one position would block the fuel inlet holes. Problem solved. Tighten the nut, add a drop of loktite, and reassemble.
