A problem often experienced with purchasing fuel on trips, particularly in the north is that fuels have different formulas for different environments. E.g. in Qld and N.T. they have waxes added to reduce the loss when volatiles evaporate. When you travel south, particularly in the cooler winter months, the waxes will solidify out of the suspension.
The rule is to use up all Qld fuel before you get to winter in the NSW highlands or Vic.

I guess the 'regularity' of my work on maintenance item is not the most dilligent, but then again, it's been serviced early when it has, and even still, my vehicle is still low KM for it's age <10,000km p.a.
So here's what the inside of the fuel filter looked like after I prised the end off it. Obviously it had never been drained and the crap had gone rusty. This is after it was drained. I guess its good it worked to remove this gunk from the fuel. You wouldn't want this gunk going through your fuel lines. I'm just glad it leaked at home and not somewhere remote. So, note to self: don't ignore the rear fuel filter.

I think id be cleaning and flushing out the fuel tank b4 going anywhere. And replacing all fuel filters. Maybe think about where u been getting ur fuel from as well.

Serviced the Defender in preparation for the fast approaching VicHigh trip.
All went very smoothly except for removing the engine sump drain plug. I had to grind the burred hex with Dremel tool to fit smaller (16mm) socket.
Also made storage box for carrying the Tirfor and cable.
Only owned it a year so I think most of it happened in the past. I will drain the new filter regularly.Quote:

Why not just change the filter every service? They're cheap. I don't bother draining mine at all and swap a new one in every 10,000 km's. Never had an issue.

Yes, fair comment. I assume the previous owner had never had it changed, judging by its state. Certainly should be changed regularly. I'll look up the service plan and see how often it is supposed to be changed. The services are 20,000 kms so that seems like a good time to me, but there are A and B services and I can't remember what is included in each.Quote:
