Tyre place rattle gun, I would suspect!

Today I started on the 610,000km service on the County. Had to go into the village to get some oil, so not completed.

FInished the service, more or less (still have to check lights & oil hinges and lubricate door strikers), and replaced front shockers. Not my favourite job - four nuts, a sixth of a turn at a time, and spanner all the way. Apart from the rest of the disassembly involved.

Had a longish "test drive" of the County after service. The vague, but unfindable, noise at the rear seems to have disappeared. It was the bolts holding the A-frame arms to the ball joint on top of the rear axle - got about half a turn on each of them.

    Ok thread resurection time...i hope.

Yesterday i put ol yeller the s3 on the hoist and thought that after almost 3 yrs since doing the brakes i should check em. So pulled the wheels off and the drum screws and backed the shoes off and removed the drums. All good. Just like id left em when i assembled them. No leaks. Refitted the drums and adjusted the shoes. Thought id check the swivel preload. Took a 5th shim out the drivers side. All good. Pass side good. Put it all back together and rotated the wheels f 2 r. Went for a drive. First bump i hit the steering wheel got a hell of a shake up. Scared the crap out of me. I can usually drive ol yeller at more than the speed limit with no probs at all. So todayy i found a tyre shop that was open and got both fronts balanced. The l/f wheel took almost 300 grams weight on the outside. The r/f took 180 grams as well. Bloody remoulds. They only cost me $1.00 for 5 rims and tyres..thanks ebay. The balance cost $30. Went for a drive....all good.

Reliability = A severe lack of 1/6th spanner turn zen training! And the rears are easy, so limited meditation there.

Removing seven rusty bolts from an ancient wheel carrier on the other hand! Hours of zen.

So this evening when i got home at about 6.00ish i dont know why but i had a shot of motivation and pulled a s3 2.25 out from a cover in my shed and thought id see if i could get it going. I bought this motor for $500 of a bloke who took it out to put a holden motor in. He said it was a runner sobeing the trusting person that i am i beleived him. Hmmm. So i turned it over and it would only turn over about half a turn each way and then lock up solid. So k pulled off the rocker cover and checked the valves. All moving. So i pulled off the head. Big lumps of carbon had flaked off the head and wouldnt allow the pistons to go over tdc. Turned over fine with the head off. So i cleaned up the pistons and valves. Still std bore. Then i cleaned the mating surfaces of the head and block. Cleaned out the threads and buffed of the bolts. Fitted a new head gasket and bolted the head down. Torqued up the bolts. Set the tappets. Fitted a dipstick ant tube. Fitted a fuel pump. Then fitted the manifolds of my dead s2a motor and fueled it up. Connected a coil. Filled with 4 litres of 20w50. Pumped fuel through to the holden carby. Cranked the motor over without soark plugs till i got oil pressure. Fitted the old 2a plugs coz the s3 plugs were stuffed. Primed up the carb and checked the timing with a test light. Good. Cranked her over and after about a minute she spluttered into life. It lives. Woo hoo im so excited.
Only pic i took. Sorry everyone. Runs well. Engine is going out on loan for a s2a till he gets the original motor overhauled.
Going to bed now its late.
