Thread: What did you do on your Landy today?

In the past week I have really started to bond with my Defender and have started by changing the oils front to back, fitted a new fuel filter, fixed the left hand front blinker, greased the drive shaft/uni's and then drove it down to Perth... It did not miss a beat !

Over the past few days I have added a new canopy which I had a helping hand in making, started to complie a spares kit - new filters, radiator hoses, belts and a couple of rear wheel hub rebuild kits (bearings, seals etc...) as the seals are currently gone and there is oil/grease leaking onto the wheels...

Then yesterday I scored a Uniden 1/4 din sized 77 channel UHF almost brand new for $95 bucks and a brand new 6db aerial for $99 bucks (to be installed by Sparky mate)

On the list for today is to try and locate a couple of spare wheels (sunraysia style) with decent rubber for spares and a fishing rod holder...

What a week its been for me and my new best mate, we are almost ready for our fishing trip down South West WA on the 18th of this month...

But wait theres more... Yesterday I found a busted chest freezer that I am going to turn into an esky, for free - what a week we have had, I can see this being a really great partnership and dont think we will ever part ways

Let a flock of canaries out from under the bonnet - aka replaced the belt tensioner (at least only a 10 min job)

i made this to hold my temp pyro and boost gauges as well as my uhf.
then fitted a ARB comp.not bad for a days work.

Fitted some guard checker plate tops,




Next will be the gear box seals...

Lot of little things done today. Been a ongoing hassle with tensioning the 12 volt alternator / power steering pump belt. Changed the belt and got it a fair bit tighter. Even though the motor and gear box is Isuzu it seems to have been infected with the rare land rover ailment. It leaks a bit of oil. Also the transfer case has a minor leak from the rear out put spline. Needs the felt seal replaced. As for the motor and gear box. There was a bolt missing from a oil pipe flange, replaced now. Old one most likely rattled out. Also a oil pan retaining bolt was half out. Now I know I did not go any where near these bolts. Tight now. Gear box side cover was cracked and welded. There are two selector shafts that are mounted in the side cover. Looks like when it was welded there might have been o rings that have been fried. So there is a small leak from at least one of these shafts. P.T.A job to fix properly considering the amount of oil leaking. So ( I know a dogey fix ) got some silastic around the shaft. looks like the front diff is leaking from between the join of the pinion housing and the diff housing. Found the three lower bolts could be tightened up. If it still leaks I`ll have to split the housing and seal it up. Topped up the front diff and the gear box.

Well it is a Landy after all but because of my OCD I wanted to fix them and a few other things.

Had worn uni's on the front wide angle prop shaft so replaced them both which also helped with a clunk that had developed on take off.

Replaced the leaking rear diff pinion seal again as it was still leaking and had to put in a new flange as it had a groove that I didn't notice last week. The advantage of the new flange kit is it has the improved mud slinger so hopefully it will last longer keeping the mud out. While at it I found the bolt holding the drive flange on was quite loose so tightened it back up to 170Nm which has improved the drive line backlash that had developed.

While I was at the back of of the car I decided to fit up the "Solid" rear salisbury diff cover. What should have been a 20 minute job turned out to be about 1.5hrs as I had to shave a bit off it internally as it had jammed up against the crown wheel when torqued up. This took a couple of test fits to ensure it was clear.

I had noticed oil at the bottom of the parking brake drum and the park brake was just not working anymore! The drum was oil soaked! It was the transfer case output shaft seal leaking. The flange was fine so replaced just the seal.

Last but not least the brake vacuum pump was leaking oil so had to replace that. What a pain of a job. But its nice now that no oil is dripping after parking the truck

All this done over four separate days when I could squeeze in some time.

Installed a Redarc electric trail brake controller and a Britpart glovebox.
Very happy with both.
Still have to line the glovebox. This will be the first trip ever to 'spotlight' with the BOSS that I've gone willingly
