    Cool TD5 Transformed!

What a revelation!!! I took the Disco for a short drive to get up to operating temperature then gave it a run up my test hill with Nanocom recording fuelling. With the old MAF I recorded a peak air flow reading of 414 kg/hr, and the Disco sounded as rough as it has been for weeks - almost like it was running on four cylinders below 2500rpm.

After a quick trip home to change the MAF I drove back to the test hill. As soon as I started the car the difference was obvious, and when I took off down the street it was apparent the roughness was gone. I'm relieved that I hadn't wasted $140.00 on a new MAF and very, very happy at the improvement in drivability. Checking the nanocom recordings peak airflow up the test hill is now 515 kg/hr using roughly same amount of throttle.

With the old MAF I only managed over 500 kg/hr up a long hill that required full throttle to maintain 110kph.

Interestingly the warm idle airflow readings are pretty much the same for both MAF's. Even so with the new MAF the D2 seems to idle more smoothly.

I did notice that the new MAF was a tighter fit into both the airbox and turbo inlet hoses. Perhaps the MAF body deforms due to clamping pressure with age and develops air leaks?

    cheers
    Paul

I agree it's a good price, especially when the local parts sellers are listing them for $250+. I would have been much more hesitant about swapping out if I was buying locally.

I got it from TD5Alive. They have the MAF listed under "service parts" in their shop. I ordered Friday morning so it's taken 6 days to arrive.

    What to do?

Replaced the tub on the 130 after trying to resolve a slow to start gripe. So I was looking at fuel pump connections. Easier to pull the tub off than drop the tank- 13 bolts, fuel filler and 9 screws plus rear light wiring and voila!! Rather that than a face full of oily dirt and mud while crawling under thing on yer back. While it was off, gave it a blast with the washer then a dose of WD40.

This was just after a rather humungous bill for new clutch, plate flywheel, rear drive shafts, four drive adapters and a smattering of gearbox/transfer box seals.

Next....still wondering why the bugger struggles to start!

    i did, err she did.

    Today, 94 disco v8 gas.
Replaced plugs, leads, coil, distro cap, button, replaced brake discs and pads all round, vacuum lines in engine bay and vacuum thing on distro. Runs better, it ran quite nicely on 5 cylinders, even better on all 8.

    Last sat, she did. my71? 88" s11a
Pulled front diff apart, rebuilt it with
New drive shafts, replaced king pins, bearings, seals, tightened diff, replaced fluids, cleaned grease out of swivel hub replaced with oil. new drums, pads and brake lines all round, bled brake and clutch system, replaced front door seals, gave blood, put soft top on properly (darn old owner) gave her a hand with the soft top. It was a bit too high and i didn't have my small ladder at home.

    Sunday, her again
Replaced washer bottle and motor, changed coolant, replaced pedal pads (with my help) replaced speedo cable.

    Monday, her again
Took it to get an RWC, replaced radiator cap passed RWC.
    Booked inspection for reg.

    Today.
Registered, pulled off old front bumper, replaced it with a new one and bull bar.

She has been busy, and i thought i was the one who did the mechanicing.

    Nothing today.....yet!

I plan to do a bit this weekend, start stripping my ex mil brush bar for priming and painting, paint the spare wheel rim and clean up so it can go on the bonnet (where all good spare wheels belong) and further develop my modified gas switch - I'm internally modifying a standard series 3 headlight/heater switch so it is on-off-on configuration instead of off-on-on, that way my gas install will match the rest of the dash, maybe fit my oil pressure gauge and reverse light switch and repair my damaged horn button, whatever else I can squeeze in today.
